I'm embarassed not to kn ow the answer to these questions but can't find them on web search.

Are stainless steel bolts graded for hardness like ordinary bolts?

What happens if a motor is wired for 240 but plugged into 120 outlet, and vice versa?

Thanks anyone,

Ernie

A mototr wired for 240V, connected to 120V, probably wil not do anything. A motor wired for 120V, connected to 240V, will let the magic smoke out when turned on.

They are graded differently. There are Eight groups of stainless steel alloys, three austenitic (Grades A1, A2, and A4), one ferritic (Grade F1), three martensitic (Grades C1, C3, and C4), and one precipitation hardening (Grade P1). 120 vs 240 volts, yeah what Inspector507 said...lots of smoke.

Actually, a 240v, 1 phase moter will run on 120v; but it won't have any torque (don't ask me how I know). 240 on a 120 motor? Smoke in a few swconds.

But it'll run really, really fast for a short while. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
