However - 40 years of experience here shows that our electric co-op is magnificent. They have, historically, responded within eight hours to all types of outages. I put my trust in them.
We have one of those co-ops that does a wonderful job, yet some times things are beyond them. Like the record flooding in Dec a few years ago. Washed out power poles when one of creeks wend from 50' wide to almost 3/4 of a mile and several feet above the highest level on record. Flooded places that had never seen water in 150 years of existence. Took a few days for the water to go down enough to repair the damage. No sweat here I have wood to burn and propane heaters as well as electric. I would NEVER only have one fuel source for heating and cooking.
I also lived through Hurricane Hugo in NC and we did not have power for 18 days. All electric (or any one source) leaves you exposed.

Low 20s and strong winds underneath warmer rain until 5AM. @ 2" of ice & sleet accumilated.

A motorist & two occupants took out a power pole last night; their car rolled down hill and ran off.

Ran the new 8K gen-set and circuit lockout for @ 4 hours to keep our pipes warm....it ran perfectly. Liking the electric start and bluetooth feature too.

After a couple of days of rain, the winds are here and outages starting. Ours went out a bit after 8AM. Glad the standby generator is here and running properly (3 kids w/families coming for lunch & gift exchange).

Just went and checked my chickens and they were all fine but I had snow blowing in under the eaves of my building and had to plug that with rags and bags until I can get that fixed better. Fed them a bunch of fly larvae and collected eggs. The girls laid this morning in -1 temps. Most of them did anyways.

The wind is brutal, I learned that my cheap @$$ gloves need to be tossed.

Brrrr, 29F here. Huge snow fall outside, almost can't see the grass in the field. :sneaky:

Actually what was somewhat worrying, last night was the freezing rain, but apparently we didn't lose power last night as the stove clock wasn't blinking. Probably around 1/8" of ice coating everything, so not too bad.

Good thread.

This was reported around 8:30 EST Friday and suggests we haven't seen the worst of it yet around the Great Lakes:

"The incipient storm system over the Great Lakes is about to undergo explosive intensification that will result in a fledgling low pressure system becoming a powerhouse “bomb cyclone” by Saturday. The consequences of such swift strengthening will include strong winds affecting nearly half of the Lower 48 states and heavy snow around the Great Lakes."

In other news, Kerosene was $6/gal yesterday. (First I've bought in 15 years.)

I use to have a couple of those and they worked great. Cost of kerosene was the problem. My wife has asthma and they really bothered her if I did not get No1 kerosene and around here the only way to get that is at a box store. Very expensive. We have a electric fireplace but the heater needs to be fixed so that is probably the plan. It will heat for about 30 seconds and it seems like it will put off some good heat if that was fixed. I also was thinking about some oil filled radiator heaters for support.

The generator handles the A/C window units if I just run the main room and the bedroom. That is more important for me because I have MS.
Was wondering how those affected people with respiratory problems given that they're unvented.
Is your generator a whole house unit on a transfer switch? Maybe get it rewired so only essential rooms are on it so the generator will handle it. Probably not a DIY project unless you're an electrician though.

I do have it wired into the breaker box but only turn on the breakers we need. In the case of last night just the heater. Only 1 of the two breakers for the heater. The problem is that my Generator is a cheap Chinese model that works surprisingly well. I use it all the time to run my Welder and have not had a issue. I should get a better quality unit but it has worked pretty good for most of my needs. Starts very easily. I only paid $600. Lol

I'm not even going to get the 'Cat out in this bitter cold 'cus in 5 days it will be in the 40's F. When we get to mittens weather, I become real tolerant on snow on the driveway. It takes a long time for that metal steering wheel knob to warm up too.

After walking the pooch in that wind, I opted for a change to the menu tonight. Got a pot of chili simmering on the stove. Will make the cornbread in about an hour I don't panic about the weather. I did take advantage of the boss panicking about the weather, though, and started my weekend a few hours early
The wind sure makes a difference. It can be sharp. I made chili yesterday also - After working on the drive so we could get out if necessary.

A few years ago I used to make chili with Williams Chili Kits. But now they have disappeared. I haven't made chili I really like since. Wonder if anyone still finds those Williams kits. I started with that and added from there.
It surely is the weather for good hot chili.

Was -8°F here this morning, with lost of wind and drifting snow. Probably only got maybe 2"-4" of snow, hard to tell. We're all hunkered down for the day, watching TV or the birds feeding on the back porch. Lots of Junco, House Finches, Cardinals and Downy woodpeckers. County Highway Dept. plow has been down the road a couple of times, but, very little traffic.
10 year old grandson had to get dressed up and go out and wade through the drifts for about 10 minutes. They don't get this stuff in Sarasota.

Wind has started knocking down some of the dead ash trees I left in the forest.
Dropping some branches from live trees though. Snow squalls have started.
Still too warm here for anything to stick, but the wind is sounding like a train coming through.
Does not look like a lot of snow will hit us, but cleanup of branches will be a lot of work.

Apparently we've had 9.5" of snow.
The wind is 24.
Windchill is around -25.
Pressure is 29.81 and falling.

That's going to be a bit of a mess to clean up, I don't think we got the 3-5 they were predicting for us but hard to tell.
