Boom Cylinders Leak

Hi All,

I've got a 2710 with a LA402 loader, still shiny new with 23 hours. Both of my boom cylinders began leaking this past Saturday....the left one pretty bad. I dropped the loader and continued working.

Any input from anyone on why this may have happened?

I've been taking it easy for break-in and not running much past 1500 RPM since I bought it, but I have moved 200 tons of sand into my arena, and I use it every day to clean stalls. I do tilt the bucket and use the edge to shape berms for irrigation and I once lifted the front of the tractor to fix the tire.

Yesterday I called the local dealer (I bought the machine out of state for a whopping $3k savings) and he said to drag it in and it might take a week to get it done. I called another dealer and he said to pull the cylinders, bring them in and he'll order the parts.

I rang the dealer I bought it from and he said he has rentals that are 4 months old that look like 4 years, and has never had cylinder leak problems.

Any thoughts?? Thanks!

HayJoe, I don't think that problem happens very often, but it isn't unheard of either. Could simply be bad seals and a relatively simple repair, or it could be actually damaged cylinder walls that would require replacing the cylinders. I know such a thing can be very discouraging on a new machine, but can certainly be fixed and should last many, many years.

One of my cylinders leaked within the first month. Dealer I bought from(not the local guy) repaired it under warranty. I dropped off the cylinder at his place. It needed a seal kit only. Said they'd seen it happen before, no problem. Your local dealer sounds like mine, I don't go there anymore/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. If I was you...I'd call the dealer I purchased from(is he a long ways away??) and see if he would ups ship the seal kits and replace them just to get going. Otherwise you may have to remove FEL(is easy) and send him the cylinders.Good Luck

You probably have what a number of us have encountered, including myself, which is paint overspray on the cylinder rods. The paint then rubs and wears the seals creating leaks. I've had three cylinders impacted by this (all repaired under warranty) and it's a real nusance. It's easy to check to see if when the rod is fully retracted the painted surface comes in contact with the seals.
