Here's another boom pole photo. This one is mounted on my JD4100. Seems to be the same one as shown in the Northern catalogs. Rated @ 800# cap.
It is shown in the highest raised postion possible on that tractor. The toplink has been shortened up and is right up close to the crossbar. When lowered the boom would be just about horizontal. Extending out the toplink allows the tip to reach lower when dropping the boom but wouldn't raise as high when lifted. Using a hydraulic toplink would be great for getting the full range of adjustment quick and easy. I gotta get me one. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

BTW, found this one for sale at little business out here in the boonies that was combined trailer sales, 3pt equipment & barbershop. Not quite sure which part was the main business but the guy in the chair getting a haircut had to sit and wait while I transacted my "Barn Pole" purchase.
