Boomer \"D\" Owners

I have a question for all of you Boomer "D" owners. I own a TC25D and have yet to figure out how to use the split brake pedal setup. How the hell does NH expect you to use the right or left brake pedal while simultaneously pressing the hydrostatic pedal? I assume I'm like the rest of you which have only one right foot! I hope the answer doesn't involve the cruise control! The typical use for the left or right brake pedal is for a slow sharp turn. Now I don't know about everyone else, but when I use my cruise control, its not set for a slow speed! If I have to use the cruise control in order to use the right/left brake pedals, than I better learn to tickle the ivories, because I'm going to be playing the cruise control switch like Liberace!

I too had thought about this back when I bought my TC33D. Seems like a bad design but to be honest I have yet to have a need to use the brakes to turn. The machine turns tight enough as it is even without super steer. For the way I use the machine most of the time I want to tread lightly anyway.

Like mswanson, I have not had the need to turn that sharply. I, too, think the wheels turn almost too much as it is. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I often inadvertantly cause the rear wheels to spin and mark the lawn because I have turned the front wheels too much. As the NASCAR guys would say, "My tractor is pushin'!".

Regarding the split brake pedal, I don't see any other way to use it other than the method you proposed, i.e., in combination with the cruise control.

it would seem that, and I'm not a mechanical engineer, that your only either turning right OR left at a time and thus should only need to push one pedal at a time.
In the time you would need to turn the steering wheel from the far laft to the far right, I could easlily move my foot from the left pedal to the right.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I too have only used my brakes to set the parking brake.

Gary,
On the Class II (and maybe Class I) Boomers, the brakes are on the same side as the hydro pedal. To push the brake you have to take your right foot off of the hydro. On the Class IIIs, the brake is on the correct side (at least to use it as a turning brake), as we do not have clutches.

Re: Boomer \"D\" Owners

Brad,

Have you used the split braking on your TC--D ??

I've tried...just playing...and it seems that for all the moaning and groaning from the drivetrain its not worth it !! It seems that unless you running max RPM's in low range the Hydro tranny doesn't overcome the braking effect from one side.

I know you have Supersteer, but have you tried it ??

Nope, never have tried it. I plan to mow tonight so I might see how well it works. I can't see me ever really using it for real though.

Re: Boomer \"D\" Owners

Hmmm ... I have thought of the split brake setup as a hold-over from larger or more utilitarian tractors - somebody in design said "gotta have it" and thus it was so. I can't imagine a situation in which I might use the split brake - but then again, I'm pretty green (new - not JD).

True I wouldn't use them a lot, but since the pedals are there, it would be nice to use them IF you want to.

Re: Boomer \"D\" Owners

I have a 25D as well. I have many trees in my yard/pasture and was hoping to use the brakes to turn a little sharper when needed. Does not work that way. Setting the cruise, then touching the brakes releases the cruise!
What I do is slow just a little and heel/toe the pedals just enough to help tighten the turn. Tricky with this pedal setup at best.
I have R4s and if I use just a little too much brake, the inside locks and drags and the outside spins like crazy.
