TC25Don,
It is for when even though your front wheels are turned, they are not giving you the expected/required response, ie soft turf/sand, mud, snow/ice. You can still turn. I have had to use them on ice in the winter going up an incline. Also works for turn really tight /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Does tear up whatever you are on though.

I can't imagine a situation in which I might use the split brake

One of the best uses for the left/right brakes is to "break" traction while doing a fast turn while on packed snow or ice, you get a continous "donut" effect! /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif Besides this very practical use I have used the brakes while maneuvering in very tight spaces such as moving hay racks around in the hay barn.

I didn't get to mow last night because it rained, but I did go out and play with the brakes a little, just in the driveway. I didn't notice the drivetrain having a hard time, it seemed to turn pretty easily with just the brakes, but that might be because I was on gravel. It might be different on grass.

It turned pretty sharp just using the brakes, but when I turned the wheel all the way for the SuperSteer to really kick in and hit the brakes, I almost got dizzy I was turning so fast.

I made all sorts of pretty patterns in the gravel doing donuts. I'm sure my neighbors thought I was on something. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Whadda ya mean they thought you were on something? Of course you were! You were on your TC40D!

bcoleman,Were you using your crouse control or is your larger tractor set up differently? I'm not sure if your brakes are on the right or left side of the tractor.

My brakes are on the left hand side. I don't have a clutch. I've also got two hydro pedals, side-by-side, instead of the big rocker pedal. That was one of the reasons I went to a 35D instead of 33D. Then the 4cyl engine took me up to the 40D. No mid-PTO on the 45D stopped me from going all the way. Like in Goldilocks, "the 40D was just right." /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I'm pretty sure on my tractor if you hit the brakes hit disengages the cruise control. I don't use cruise much though.

Brad, if you unlock your pedals, you can brake with either and the cruise will not disengage. You have to press them both at once to disengage cruise. I use that feature all the time when mowing as I circle trees. In the beginning when my brakes were new, they used to really squawk, but now they are smooth as silk. I really like our setup. The pedals and their operation are perfect in my opinion.

All of the guys gave good responses. However, they didn't pay close attention to your post.

When I looked at the NH, I also realized that you would need to grow another right leg to use the brakes and HST pedal at the same time. Otherwise, you have to learn to sit "side saddle". Appears to be another design engineering screw-up or a base model that can be gear or HST.

Jim, thanks. I didn't know that, or didn't remember at least. Wednesday night was the first time I had unlocked the brake pedals, and will probably be the last for a while.

All of the guys gave good responses. However, they didn't pay close attention to your post.

rotr, why do you say we didn't pay close attention to his post? We discussed that the brakes were on the same side as they hydro pedal on the Class II Boomers and that the only way to use them is to set the cruise. Was there something else in his initial post that we didn't comment on? I think everyone agrees it is a bad design.

Jim, that's the way my Kubota worked, and I don't know about all the New Holland's, but I read the manual for my cousin's TC29D, and then got on it to see if the manual was right (and it was). One of the brake pedals releases the cruise, so you can only brake turn with the cruise on in one direction (and now I've forgotten which direction it was). Really surprised me that it would be that way.
