Dont get caught without enough tractor. 35 to 40 hp is probably fine.
Yes, you can survive without 4x4, but youll probably regret it.

Thanks for the advice. What situations would you think I'd be at most risk to get caught with out enough power? If our situations are similar, this insight would be very valuable information to have.

When i was looking for a used tractor, hst was on my list of needed
items. The tractor i found (Kubota 4310) had gst instead of hst.
To date I have not regreted the gst.

How are the gears set up? Any type of shuttle shifter? Synchro? You'll have to excuse me because my experience with tractor trans is limited. The last time I drove a geared tractor was probably over 20 years ago on an old Ford 8n. All I ever did was set the throttle about 1/2 or 2/3's, select my gear let the clutch out nice and slow and just joy ride or mow a field. My only experience with a loader has been with a hst on either a skid loader or a Kubota L3130. So I really don't have a concept of using a geared tractor for various tasks.

It took me a year of looking before i found the tractor the suited my
needs, at my budget. Keep looking with an open mind as far as your
needs.

Oh yeah, I know it could take a while. I like to have as many model #'s in mind as I can for what to keep searching for. I also feel very comfortable knowing the longer I can hold off on a purchase, the better idea I'll have of just what I need the machine to do.

What methods of searching did you find most effective? Did you end up buying from a private seller or a dealer?

Few hours away there's a L2900, 842 hours, stored inside, FEL, 4 in 1 bucket, 4x4, Pulverizer & box grader included. Asking $10,500

Thoughts?

You mentioned keeping livestock at your place. Are you going to need to regularly stack and move large hay bales in the winter? Spread manure? When we bought ours, we first started looking at the BX and B series, but quickly ruled the BX out, just not enought tractor. We also were considering the L series but it was a bit much. We keep horses and so far our B3200 has done everything we need to get done, including brush hogging, moving hay, cleaning up manure, plowing snow from the drives etc.

We're going to have all pasture based livestock with scheduled rotational grazing. So the animals are spreading the manure themselves with some help from us rotating them and the electric fence of course :) We are going to be doing some heavy composting and may look to spread that if needed or sell it. For now, my equipment choice is not factoring in spreading since its not something we'll have to do. If I find I'd like to use a spreader for the compost, and my machine can't do it, I'll barter for the use of a neighbors more than likely.

Another job for the tractor that I should mention would be hauling a hay wagon...more than likely for hay rides around the farm. I don't have a wagon size in mind yet, and have no concept what's needed. So if anyone can offer some experience on that one, its also greatly appreciated!
