Been looking for months; lots of expensive scrap, lots of expensive new ones. Five foot models are plentiful! Happened to call the local New Holland shop and they had just gotten in a BB48X on consignment @ $1200. Woods and Bush Hog were my picks - so I bought it. One owner, light use, great shape!

The top link does not engage when I set up the cutter per the manual for my iMatch quick hitch. It seems I might need a longer hook such as the one from Bolt On Hooks?

Use a chain instead:

Oops, you said quick hitch, that means you would have to hook up manually.

Many rotary cutters won't catch the top hook on a quick hitch. I need to take off the quick hitch to use mine. The chain "top link" looks like a great idea!

Would the quick hitch hit the “A” frame on the mower if going through a ditch? Certainly looks like it would.

Why don't the manufacturers just ditch those flimsy bars and run chains instead? So much better in so many ways.

They do. This is the factory "quick hitch adapter kit" for my Frontier (Woods) GM1072R.

I also have a Wood 5'. What's the best way to sharpen the blades? Do they come off?

Thanks.

Raise it up with the tractor, turn off the tractor, support the mower (jack stands, wood/cement blocks, etc...), crawl under it, lightly touch up with an angle grinder. Severely worn/cracked/busted blades should be replaced. They DO come off, but/and it's a bit of work.

Lots of videos on the process:
