Backhoe Bought JD TLB in a poke?

I do not think so in 1983. They called it Revr something I read.

Don't know what was available in the construction models but Power Shift was available in 1969 in 4020s'.

Anyway checking the hydraulic pressures for the transmission is a good way to start, could be a worn pump or restriction such as a plugged filter.

Steve at this point I think it may be the cylinder that engages the forward reversing clutch for my reading and the fact it works great after setting over night. It will even take off in 7th gear with a snap and no slipping.

Hopefully pulling the top housing plate will get the needed access. I read on ebay how some have addressed the reverser slipping issue before listing them so I guess it is not unheard of in 25+ year old shuttle systems.

Scheafer Enterprises was awesome. The kids and I drove up to Wolf Lake, IL and picked the seat pedestal that Matt had pulled and was holding for me. While the foam was shot the pedestal worked like new and actually had new slides put on it recently. They are members in three parts networks so they have a good shot at finding the parts of construction equipment in the US.

My son tossed my daughter's frisbee and it landed on the mostly flat awning across the front of their office building and two of the staff used a lift and got it for my daughter. That impresses a father too. They had taken my CC infor and I thought had processed it but since I was coming to pick it up they just ran it after I was pleased with the used part and they had it loaded for me. While they are 2.5 hours away I was gald I got to see the scope of their operation and meet some of the staff. If calling them for parts they will want casting numbers stamped on the mating parts in many cases.

I got in an hour of digging just before dark. Learning where the power is to cut large roots is going to take some practice. :)

When the good light was about gone i started back to the house and while the forward clutch was slow to engage it would fully and actually kill the engine if I was in too high of a gear. That was a good sign based on my non backhoe clutch experience.

How large a root are you talking about?

Have you gone thru the filters on this backhoe since you bought it?

Steve the roots were as large as four inches and you could see the ground moving when the hoe was under a root. I found curling the bucket gave me the most cutting power. I am looking for a 12" to use vs. the 18" bucket when digging up stumps/trees.

The past owner stated he just replaced both filters under the tractor and in hind sight he may have done so due to the slow to engage forward clutch when hot. I will look at the nuts on these filters so see if I see any wrench marks. I asked before I paid and after I paid if they knew of any issues with the 310 B JD backhoe and they stated there was no known issues.

The engine is idling much smoother after a couple hours of actual use and a couple hours of just messing around. I added about 1/2 gallon of Sea Foam to about 10 gallons of fuel and a 16 oz bottle of WM TCW3 spec 2 cycle oil for injector pump lube. It idled really rough (under 1500 RPM) when I got it home so I think the heavy Sea Foam mixture is helping or it could just be due to using the hoe. :)

If it did not have a nasty leak in a hose to the bucket I would not take it into the shop just yet or may get a neighbor with hose making equipment in his shop to help me and just replace that hose for now. Why is it the hard to get to hoses that seem to go first? :)

The clutch engaging has improved with use. One night (a day to two after the first one hour dig) at about 1500 RPM I went back and forth for about 15 minutes or more and at first the shifting was crisp forward like it is when going to reverse then the delay in the forward clutch engaging started getting longer and longer but on engaging it was NOT slipping.

Unlike after about an hour of digging last Wednesday (first use ever) when I had to back to the house when it would NEVER engage going forward but today the delay was there but NO slipping after the delayed engagement. The 15+ minutes (after the engine was already hot) of non stop reversing in the driveway was done between the first dig and the hour dig after church tonight.

Perhaps the the backhoe has been parked for a while and it was pulling OK when parked by the past owners?

The fact it is working better each time I use it makes me thing it is a "flow" thing too. After the first dig it would only move forward in 1st gear (low range) but today coming back to the house after a delayed engagement of like 5 seconds it pulled up the same grade in 5th (high range) just fine and that was after I tried in 7th gear to have it kill the engine when the forward clutch engaged.

The delay was there before it engaged but as soon as it engaged the killing of the engine (1500 RPM) was sudden and complete (no slipping indicated).

The more I use it the more happy I am with our purchase. Just like if we bought another old motorhome we would better now what to look for the same would go for another old backhoe. :)

We will get the leaking hose and a few pin/bushings replaced and the forward reverser thing figured out and fixed.

Thanks for all the input. I see there is a learning curve to these old machines. :)
