Steve the roots were as large as four inches and you could see the ground moving when the hoe was under a root. I found curling the bucket gave me the most cutting power. I am looking for a 12" to use vs. the 18" bucket when digging up stumps/trees.
The past owner stated he just replaced both filters under the tractor and in hind sight he may have done so due to the slow to engage forward clutch when hot. I will look at the nuts on these filters so see if I see any wrench marks. I asked before I paid and after I paid if they knew of any issues with the 310 B JD backhoe and they stated there was no known issues.
The engine is idling much smoother after a couple hours of actual use and a couple hours of just messing around. I added about 1/2 gallon of Sea Foam to about 10 gallons of fuel and a 16 oz bottle of WM TCW3 spec 2 cycle oil for injector pump lube. It idled really rough (under 1500 RPM) when I got it home so I think the heavy Sea Foam mixture is helping or it could just be due to using the hoe.
If it did not have a nasty leak in a hose to the bucket I would not take it into the shop just yet or may get a neighbor with hose making equipment in his shop to help me and just replace that hose for now. Why is it the hard to get to hoses that seem to go first?
The clutch engaging has improved with use. One night (a day to two after the first one hour dig) at about 1500 RPM I went back and forth for about 15 minutes or more and at first the shifting was crisp forward like it is when going to reverse then the delay in the forward clutch engaging started getting longer and longer but on engaging it was NOT slipping.
Unlike after about an hour of digging last Wednesday (first use ever) when I had to back to the house when it would NEVER engage going forward but today the delay was there but NO slipping after the delayed engagement. The 15+ minutes (after the engine was already hot) of non stop reversing in the driveway was done between the first dig and the hour dig after church tonight.
Perhaps the the backhoe has been parked for a while and it was pulling OK when parked by the past owners?
The fact it is working better each time I use it makes me thing it is a "flow" thing too. After the first dig it would only move forward in 1st gear (low range) but today coming back to the house after a delayed engagement of like 5 seconds it pulled up the same grade in 5th (high range) just fine and that was after I tried in 7th gear to have it kill the engine when the forward clutch engaged.
The delay was there before it engaged but as soon as it engaged the killing of the engine (1500 RPM) was sudden and complete (no slipping indicated).
The more I use it the more happy I am with our purchase. Just like if we bought another old motorhome we would better now what to look for the same would go for another old backhoe.
We will get the leaking hose and a few pin/bushings replaced and the forward reverser thing figured out and fixed.
Thanks for all the input. I see there is a learning curve to these old machines.
