Bought my first hand gun!

I have a 17hmr but I also have almost 150 rounds. and in the last 8 years or so I have shot maybe 50, so I think I am good on those for another 15 years! Its a cool and fun caliber, but its so accurate that you hit everything you aim at, so its not to much fun unless you havesomething fun to shoot.

My wife and I were in the local Academy Sports store (Lewisville, TX) this morning so naturally I had to ask about the ammo, even though I don't need any. They had no 9 mm or .38 spl. ammo at all. The guy said the truck comes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They open at 8 a.m. and on those days there's a line of customers waiting at the door when they open.

Same thing in this area Bird. I have heard they line up at 0530. and at 0730 an employee comes out with a list of what wass on the truck including guns. Those who dont want any leave the reast get it all. Supposedly there is about 8-12 guys at ours every day.

Yea its best to be there by 930 to get the good stuff. But they do sometimes lay stock out all day long, so that those mourning guys dont buy it all. This has been proven as a guy at work has scored a brick at like 530pm before, and has seen a box of 22lr in a case under the counter open and the girl told him that there was none in stock, even though he could see it through the cracked door in the case.

Walmarts, Academy's, Cabelas, Dicks, etc all around here have bare shelves for most of the typical calibers like .45 ACP, .40, 9mm, 223, etc. that are usually purchased in quantity. Decent supply on larger typical hunting rounds like 270, 30-06, etc.

Same goes for the online vendors like Cheaper than Dirt, Sportsmansguide, etc. Wait times of up to several months for those popular calibers.

If you just can't stand to wait, you can pay roughly 2X through some small vendors and private sales on places like Gunbroker.

I've had 9mm on order since last October, delivery keeps getting pushed out, now looking at June.

Well I just learned that my order for a P226 40SW Elite, will be shipped tomorrow. I ordered this pistol 13 months ago. I actually was beginning to think the order was lost.

That's really nice! Stainless is the best way to go.

Thanks for the comments on that 226.

I have a good friend who just retired from UPS. He also told me the ammo shipments hit our area on Fridays. Although I am pretty well set on most of what I shoot. You can never have enough reloading components.

You can buy five Savage bolt action .223 rifles for what you would pay for one AR, and you will end up paying at least 10x as much for ammo over the life of the rifle. One shot is all you need. Spend some of the money you save on a good scope, Leupold preferably. You should also think about a large caliber rifle, like a .308 if you like military calibers. A .308 will handle the biggest of your Texas porkers.

The AR is a good enough shooter, but it's overpriced and butt ugly. It's also the rifle of choice for people who don't have to pay for their own ammo.

Your Sig, OTOH, was a great choice. Congratulations.
