box and brush?

Brett, you said this will be yard?as in finished turf/yard/mowing/etc??? The try a combination to get a finished surface. First spray roundup or similar to kill the vegitation. Wait 2-4 weeks + so everythng is not only dead but also already dry. If able I would then rent the walk behind hog and cut it all as low as possible. Then use your box to rip up the heavy roots/etc and drag off to burn. Then after the heavy stuff and heavy rocks are out hit it with the tiller (?rototiller right??) Rototilling is very slow gowing but it really leaves a beautiful surface. If this is your yard then the time spent will be a joy for years to come. Just my idea...a lot of work but most of it is seat time and should leave a great product....good luck pal

Peter,
thanks, I'll do all that in the fall, this will be in SC so there is no reason to plant any grass in the late spring/ early summer. But I'll have to get a grip on the field/yard when we move down in late June. By then the weeds will be 4' high so I may rent the walk behind then as well. If I can just get it mowed and get moved in, then my finish mower will maintain it until I can go with your system, thanks again, brett
ps, any cheaper veg killers than Roundup?

Now that's cool. What little I've used my BB I have roots you could pull a car with! You know when you grab one.

Brett, be careful when snagging roots with the boxblade. I have done wheelies on several occasions even with 200# weights on the front. Be ready to hit the clutch. BTW, does moving to SC mean you are out of the band?

Instead of Roundup brand you can go to TSC and buy there "total vegitation killer"...nice name huh!?! I believe it is the same ingredients just packaged by someone else. I just bought a 2.0 or 2.5 gallon concentrate for $75.00. They had the same thing by Roundup right next to it for $135.00. You can also buy smaller quarts and gallolon of the concentrate. I like the stuff because it works very well but is inactivated in the soil by ?bacteria? so you can still plant after using it. Some of the vegitation killers will prevent any regrowth for months...not good if you are TRYING to get seed to grow.

And you are very smart and correct about planting seed in the fall...less heat, better moisture, and less competion from weeds. Good luck

I would be inclined to try and rent a small tractor and bush hog for a day or so. Around here a small Kubota and 48" rotary cutter on a trailer rents for about $285-300 per day. I cut two acres in about two hours, with a lot of standing trees to mow around. Bush hogging gets all the overgrown stuff cut down as low as possible. I would then apply Round Up or equivalent. It is my decidedly unscientific opinion that the weed/brush killer works better after getting the overgrowth cut down low. I value my time, so I would vote on trying to do the initial cutting with a tractor and rotary cutter, even if I had to rent one.

Norm,
As a matter of fact, I retired officially from the Marine Band today! They read the usual bit and gave me a medal. Instead of sword or watch for a gift, I opted for a 6' rear blade! Hows that! I'll think of the band every time I hit a pile of horse poop with that blade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Possibly a TBN first. Anyway, I'm done there, selling our Md. house, and moving in June as soon as school is done. Thanks for asking. BrettW

Jay, thanks,
What is the least expensive brand of brush cutter? I can run about 44" max. Thing is this is a one/twice deal then I don't ever plan on needing it again. If I rent a walk behind cutter it is 70/day. I don't fancy the idea of having an implement sitting on my lot forever and not needing it our using it. bw

You can buy a generic version of Round Up called mirage. Check your to see if there is a local UAP warehoue near you.
Not sure if its restricted or not in the concentration form. Not sure if its a restricted herbicide or not??

Brett

I rented one of them walk behind brush cutters to cut about 3/4 acre of weeds, tall stalky weeds 4 to 6 feet tall. I would never do it again, I pushed and pulled and rammed that thing to get it to go over the weeds for 8 hours. I don't wish that on anyone. Rent or buy a cheap brush hog or maybe find a neighbor and pay him it will be worth every penny.
