Lots of good info.So i guess to figure how much gravel i need i take the driveway WXLXD and convert to yards??? is that correct???

Length in ft., times width in ft., times thickness in inches, divided by 324 will give you cubic yards. Ask your quarry how many tons per cubic yard and you're all set. I'd scrape off at leat 4"of dirt or even a little more before laying down a gravel base. Oppinions differ but I've had good luck with crusher run 6" deep and after letting it settle and compact, wait for a couple of good rains, dress it with 57's or some sort of finer gravel. Gravel quality varies all over the country and even between nearby quarries. Ask locals what best in your area.

Prior to putting down any gravel you might consider putting down some geotextile like fabric. That will prevent the gravel from migrating down into your subsoil and may make for a sturdier surface to drive over. You also may wish to put down more like 12" to 18" of gravel depending on your soil conditions, what type of vehicles will drive over it and how much rain you get where you are located. We have clay where I am and adding rain and melting snow to it makes my gravel driveway (that was not constructed with geotextile or a decent base of 12" to 18" of gravel) a mess. Redoing a driveway, or 30' of a driveway, is probably a lot more work than doing it right the first time. But, your soil, exact use and weather conditons may not warrant geotextile type fabric (comes in 12.5' wide by about 380' long rolls I am told) or more than 6" of gravel. Have fun.
