One more thing......based on your described needs take a look at getting a toothbar for your loader bucket. It makes a real difference in moving brush and digging.

A number of folks at TBN have this one and find it to be excellent. Very stout.

And no different than the premium you pay for a Yanmar, that is wearing green and yellow paint under John Deere decals.

greg g . . . I'd totally agree with what you said about implements but disagree with what you say about the tractors. I really try to be color blind regading machines so don't take this as someone who is blindly defending JD. But if you could get a brand new Yanmar it would be different than a brand new JD even if it came from the same factory. Yanmar has a contract to manufacture SOME of the JD tractors and they do it to the specific JD specs and are forbidden, by contract, from marketing the same machine. This is also true with Case/New Holland/Farmall products that are made by Shiburu (sp?). You will occasionally see a Shiburu tractor but it will not be the same machine as the CNH products. Now I am not saying what is better or wrose, I'm just saying that they don't simply change the sheetmetal (or plastic) and slap new decals on the same machine.

I think the important thing is to lay out the tasks and then find all the tractors that are best suited for that task list. Then play with those and see which machines fit your rear end and which dealers fit your comfort profile to provide service, parts, etc. You may end up spending more or less than you planned, but you shouldn't lock yourself into a brand for the sake of a brand, and you shouldn't mistakenly believe that an off brand is better and cheaper. Lets face it, 3 companies sell about 90% of all the compact tractors out there (Kubota, Deere & New Holland) that means that they have parts and service virtually everywhere and they probably have a higher resale value for those that think that is important. Fighting for the remaining 10% off all the Compact Tractor sales would be something like Mahindra; they are probably the #4 brand? Jinma might be #5? Case/Farmall division of New Holland is in there somewhere. Kioti is coming up fast, but is still small. Kama, Century, Zetor, Eicher, Lenar, Branson, Long, and a dozen others are also out there.

I thought I was pretty clear in specifying that I was not knocking Kubota or John Deere. This is after all a thread addressing a box blade question. All I did was draw a comparison to illustrate how "brand names" can influence retail prices - in favor of the retailer.

By the way, I've had two JDs - one with a Yanmar engine - AND a Yanmar (US). If I thought there was anything wrong with doing so, I'd never have purchased them in the first place.

Box blades, remember?

Mark, I am also inexperienced with box scrapers, but I have a sand/dirt road to maintain and I think I'll need one when I buy my tractor. The Kubota dealer tells me I should invest in the hydraulic tilt capability, instead of manual adjustment, and it sounds right but the price tag on the hydraulics is high. I'll be grading this 1/8 mi. 10% road maybe two or three times per year at most. Can I rent the scraper and save the investment? Is the manual adjust as difficult as I think it would be?

Thx, Randy

The Kubota dealer quite probably would make more money if he could talk you into adding top-n-tilt to your purchase. Kinda like the Dodge salesman that wants you to buy that chrome plated muffler belt.

TNT would be a boon to a landscaper, but I think is complete overkill for an eighth mile of driveway maintenance. If you have at least one set of rear remotes on that Kubota though, you might consider just the hydraulic toplink component of the TNT system.
