A Box Scraper is designed for peeling dirt in thin layers, then moving dirt short distances. It is good at that task.

A Box Blade is not the right tool for removing brush. For removing brush I use a Ratchet Rake bucket attachment, which grabs brush with sufficient tenacity that the tractor can pull it out.

To control brush and perhaps eliminate it with regular mowing over time, a PTO-powered Rotary Cutter / Bush Hog is most commonly used.

I cleared about an acre of brush and small trees a couple of months ago. Was not too hard to do about 7 to 8 hours work. The few trees that were over six inches diameter I dug out with the backhoe. I removed all the stumps as we were starting a vineyard.

A small dozer would be better for this work but I used the box blade in reverse and pushed the trees over. No bumping trees as that can bend up your 3 point hitch or worse. Top and tilt helps a lot as you can follow the contours easier than using a fel. Smoothed it up just a little and drilled about 1100 post holes for the vines.

rotary cutter first (bush hog = lamen terms and a brand name)

then maybe a box blade with scraficier teeth down, to mess up the roots,

a potatoe plow / middle buster might work with deeper action that what scraficer teeth on a box blade would give.

mini ex (mini excavator) with more than likely a toothed bucket, would dig up a lot quickly. but still most likely want to mow it down before hand.

the mowing down before hand reasoning is that, all the vines even the roots will cause what ever you using to skid along top of the vines or roots possibly vs actually digging down into the dirt. mowing it down chops it all up. so stuff is more likely to pile up, vs getting caught up under cutting edge, and causing cutting edge to slide along top of it.

Hopefully the link is still good.

Depending on what you have for plants to remove. If you don't have a loader bucket, and raspberry bushes are the size of material......go for it! The box blade would work. You can even add a root rake, ratchet rake to the cutting edge.

If you have a loader, the box blade will not be an improvement. If you are worried about having an acident and poking a hole in the front of your tractor, remember that the box blade will not be able to lift as high to release a bent over sapling.

If you got the box blade try it. Rippers down of course. Just be cognizant of what the surface stems may do to the tractor. Mowing first may be advisable.

Ragmuffin,
What do you want to do after you clear the brush and vines?

Some deep rooted vines such as grapes may go down 15 feet or more. So depending on what you have you may want to use a herbicide to kill the vegetation off first. Then clean and shear off the surface after a few days. You could then till and smooth up and replant what you want.

Ratchet rakes, front fel blades and box blades will not pull up deep roots, they will break them off in most cases. I did not use the rippers much in cleaning the area in the pictures. A lot depends on what your goal is and what you want to do with the cleared land.

A sturdy root rake is the way I lean if I'm just doing general clearing.

But it really just depends on what exactly you're removing. A box scraper would work mostly just for things with shallow roots that'll come right up.

As Egon said...try couple pass different setting w/ripper before deciding depth.
