I have a bx22 that I purchaced in june 13, 03. My yard and drive way is pretty steep. when I set my emergency brake on the hill with the loader and backhoe attached the brake won't hold the tractor it starts rolling back. Also when I have gone up my steep hill in high gear and the tractor stops I press hard on the brake to put the tractor in low gear and it wants to roll back! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Is this normal ? It isn't abnormal. The brakes on tractors aren't super strong, so you have to do stuff like keep it in gear and drop your implements to keep them stable on steep slopes. There's lots of folks that have had machines run away from them in situations where the tractor was in neutral or something, on a hill, and got out of control - and the brakes weren't strong enough to stop it.

If you have a hydro transmission, that can help with keeping the tractor in place - keep it in gear with no pressure on the hydro pedals. If not, just drop your implements (FEL and hoe) and that should stop it (use your brakes, too). One of the best safety measures I've heard of is to always drop your implements when things start to get out of control...

Last thought is to come to a complete stop first before trying to change gear ranges. Mine doesn't like to switch on the fly very much...

David,

I have a new bx22 and have experienced the same thing with the brakes. When I apply the brake on a steep hill to shift ranges, the tractor rolls back very slowly and does not hold. I am trying to make it a habit of dropping the FEL whenever I get off the tractor on unlevel ground. Guess we are just going to have to live with this.

thanks for the replys I notice that the tractor stops a lot better with the loader and the backhoe removed. I had to put down the backhoe stabalizers to keep my tractor from rolling with the emengency break on and it in gear [hydro ] trans.I know it is a better idea to shift into low gear on a flat surface before going up a steep hill sometimes I forget to shift into llow gear before I drive up a steep hill. David.

Could it be that with the added weight of the BH and the FEL make the brakes just not hold. Can you adjust the brakes up a little tighter?

David,
I have a B7500 with FEL and BH and my brakes hold on very steep hills with both installed. They have never slipped. As others have stated, it's always a good practice to lower your implements when parked on a slope, but I still think your brakes should hold. I would talk to your dealer. Your brakes might need an adjustment.

Like Greg said, are you sure that your brakes don't need adjusting? I have never driven a newer tractor that wouldn't hold its self on a hill.
