Re: Brand new 790 I\'m nervous about the 300 FEL

Guys, I just have to chuckle about the slight concerns for JD's loader. I don't own one, but am going to go take a look for the second time today. It really has my interest.

Now, I'm an avid gardener and have already moved tons, literally not figuratively, of dirt around in getting ready for the spring planting. I know what can be accomplished with a shovel. The 300 loader should be one heck of a man in comparison.

Gordon21, I'm sure it will get the job done nicely. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

An easy way to get a feel for stability with the loader is to fill the bucket with rocks or dirt -- a nice heavy load. Then lift it about a foot or foot and a half. Drive around a bit on a level surface. Then quickly lower the bucket, still full, but stop suddenly about 6 inches off the ground. You'll pick up the back end if you need more ballast.

Gordon,
Congrats on the new tractor. I have the same tractor / loader combination as you. Make sure you have an attachment or ballast box on the rear at all times. I also have loaded tires and found out how off balanced this can be without rear ballast. I took off the ballast box to skid some trees out of the woods. It was a little bit icy and there was a little snow on the ground. I drove into the woods and had poor traction on the rear tires right off the bat. I immediately switched into four wheel drive and continued to drive around. It was a little better but not great. Once I latched onto a downed tree and pulled I had no problem with traction. It just takes a little time to figure out the balance. I'm running about 400 lbs in my box through the winter moving snow and hauling in firewood and will add more in the spring when I really start moving dirt and other material.

Joe,

Is it the same for the rear tires i.e. swapping them with the valve pointing inside would make the distance between the rear tires a bit wider ?
