Norm, how do you really feel?

Not to mention the ones on PHDs. Good thing that's there so I can stand right next to the spinning and totally exposed 12" diameter auger without being in danger.

You mean you don't have a guard for the auger, too? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I'm shocked and dismayed.

I agree with Jinma...looks like a grade 8 and those thread are torn off...still a lot of force/vibration to do that.

Get it fixed with help from the dealer to make sure it is right. Then go around and tighten everything. I bought a cheaper TSC brand several years ago and had the gearbox loosen as was stated in one of the above posts. I also ended up tearing it apart early last year. I welded all the seems completely since they were only tacked in 2-3" sections. I also welded some of the 3pt frames and added thicker plates at the bottom link attachments. Your landpride should fair better than mine. But still these things do a lot of work and need attention to keep you safe. Thats why I say get help from your dealer to make sure it is right from the start and then maintain well. We want you to stay safe and in one piece

actually the hardware guide specs state that a triangle is for grade 5 bolts. grade 2 have no markings usually and if grade 8 then they are susuposed to have the 6 dashes on out side corners or a different symbole but this is knolage that is 15 years old. so only tanke it for whaat i's worth.

When you get the shear pin replaced I would let the shield turn freely. As long as it spins freely on the shaft it will stop easily

I agree! The spinning guards actually work pretty well - they are smooth and not driven with any force. So if you manage to get past the spinning implement itself, you can drag your loose clothes or long hair on it and not get caught. Then you just have to get back past the big pieces of sharp spinning metal again so you can get back on the tractor!

One thing to keep in mind is if the cover is secured by that small chain and not spinning you know it is indeed functioning.

A spinning cover could be jammed up somehow and not ready to stop spinning when touched like a properly functioning one does.

This may be splitting hairs but...I keep thinking of how we used to check high voltage lines to be sure they were dead before working on them:

1)Test the checker (hot sticks) on a live line.

2)Test the line in question to verify it is indeed dead.

3)Test the checker again on a live line to make sure it did not fail between the time you first tested it and the time you checked the dead circuit.

Total time between 1 & 3? Maybe 30 seconds on a slow day.

I never saw anyone not do step 3. Also never saw the tester fail. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Myself I am pretty much on the same page as everyone else in this thread (if I remember right /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ). But I do think a stationary guard is telling us that it is functioning, while a spinning guard is not really telling us anything...except maybe to keep away. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Small world.. that's how we did it too. And in fact.. we also used ground clamps to tie the line we were working on to ground... just a bit of extra safety.. Still wore gloves and use insulated tools too..

If it doesn't get grounded, someone else can work on it, not me.

Yeah even an open line can generate a lot of induced voltage in the right contitions. Always ground the sucker, then it can't bite.
