Brands of implements - Let's rate them!!

Re: Brands of implements - Let\'s rate them!!

I agree with the other guys. Great idea, difficult to do.

For example, I have a King Kutter 5' brush hog. I use it a lot, to maintain over 50 acres of pasture and hayfields, plus I do a lot of brush hoging for my neighbors. I use it so much that it's been on one of my tractors since May, and I haven't taken it off!! I use it on rough terrain, and heavy brush, and I've cut many sapplings that were over two inches in diameter. I've hit huge rocks, and all sorts of stumps. And in three years, I've never even sharpened the blades. I abuse the poor thing, and it has exceeded any expectation that I've ever had. So I think it's absolutely outstanding.....BUT, I've never used any other brush hog. So if I tried another brand, would I like it better? Hard to believe, but maybe. But do I think King Kutter gives you the most bang for your buck? Absolutely!!! Could I rate it against others? Nope, it's the only brand I've used, so how can I compare it?

Bob,

There's the kicker right there! We'd have to first agree......!

This just isn't going to happen. Not because anybody is going to be difficult. But because of what the others have said about the different experiences people have had, or the lack of experience with various brands, or even the different ways people would define ECONOMY CLASS vs. PREMIUM CLASS or MID-RANGE CLASS.

As much as I agree that it would/could be useful information, it would be very difficult for the frequenters of TBN to do this.

But maybe there's some ag school or service out there that could do it. They could get the various models of implements they wanted to test, and put each one through it's paces in the same way. The results would be measured and reported in an organized, objective manner. that's the only way that I can see that this could work! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif IMHO.

Re: Brands of implements - Let\'s rate them!!

I could have written about 90% of what you did from my experiences. My 5' King Kutter has gone through things I'd never have believed it would have. I've been really pleased with the performance of it...especially for the money. Would I like a Bush Hog better? Maybe, maybe not. Am I happy I didn't spend double the money to own one? Absolutely!

r0GuE,

You don't want to hear this, but I believe the best answer to your question is "spend many hours scouring through the attachment posts." There is a wealth of information, some good some bad. But after you have read enough of them, you will begin to develop your own opinions based on seeing the same comments repeated over and over by several people (as opposed to one windbag). A great example is the KK brush hog. The one most people have (from TSC or equivalent) isn't in the same league as heavy duty products from Woods, Bush Hog, Landpride.... But those manufacturers make different levels of their products too, which just complicates rankings. I was raised with the view to "buy the best and only cry once." But for me (~30 acres of field/brush), the KK hog was, and I believe still is, the best price performer. Some of its design points irk me, but for what I saved I was able to buy another implement I needed. I'm not sure it I've helped at all, or just muddied the water even more. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
