After running fine for months, tractor sat for a few weeks, fuel tank nearly full.

Upon starting, and with the throttle lever in idle position (750 or so RPM), the RPMs immediately jump to 2500 and surges between 2500 and 3500. It stays in that RPM range and will not drop to a reasonable idle speed.

Retried on/off several times over the past day, but the situation has not improved.

Make sure your throttle lever actually moves the cable and the throttle, unlikely but the cable could be broken. Or the throttle assembly on the engine could be blocked open by insect/bird/rodent nests.

The surging concerns me. Have you changed the oil recently? The 3510 doesn’t have a turbo, correct? I’m trying to rule out any kind of oil leakage into the cylinders. As Eddie said, check the throttle linkages for binding and blockage. How many hours on your tractor?

That's a scary scenario.. I sure HOPE its something simple like a throttle cable..
because if its the type of injection pump I think it is.. they're no fun to remove or install..{Zexel VE}
IF yours is equipped w/ a manual shut off lever on the injection pump, some are.. along w/ the electric shut off..
You might be able to free-up the metering sleeve.. {I suspect its stuck} .. if its not the cable..
Can you snap a pic of the inj. pump & post it??

Hi Pump guy, I have a possibly dumb question. My Branson has a VE type pump (I think it's a Zexel, something made under license) with an electric and a manual shutoff. The manual shutoff is not connected to anything, it's just a lever. I moved it to see if it'll move in case I ever need it, and it's kinda stiff probably due to being painted over. I moved it back to where I'd found it. If I'd left it where it was, moved halfway, would it affect running in any way?

ericm979 Mine will return by itself with a spring. I am yet to try that on my tractor, but having somewhat experience with VE pumps, I'm pretty sure that it will just cause any effect close to the end of the travel. So being halfway, shouldn't make much of a difference. If it did, you would notice lack of power due to fuel delivery being halfway closed.

Depending on the "setup".. you may experience low power as, ptsg said.. PUT IT BACK TO FULL OPEN..

My thinking for Sanybeach was, the metering sleeve was stuck WIDE OPEN & if the op used the "manual shut-off" it might break it free.??
