Has some debris got caught in the shifter linkage?

Just a mite of a splinter from when I hit some dead branches that somehow took a magical path is all it took to lockup the shifter! Dead on analysis, thanks a ton.

This is a great site I have been reading for a couple of days. Since you own a Branson tractor I have a question about a pending purchase of a Branson, 2004, 4220 with loader and backhoe. The tractor has 500 hours and appears to be in very good condition. The dealer has it for sale. I have two concerns and would appreciate some advise. The dealer did a clutch job after taking the tractor on trade-in. Would you be concerned about the tractor needing a new clutch at 500 hours? Finally, I am familiar with the major tractor brands but not with the Branson. Do you know any reason why I should not buy a Branson? I have a deposit on this tractor and must make a decision by Monday. Thanks, John

I have a 2004 Century 3040 which I believe is similar to the Branson 4220. I bought mine used also and now have about 280 hours on it. I've owned it for about 2 years now and it's been a great tractor with plenty of power and made really heavy. I had to do some adjustments to my cluth when I first got the tractor since the original owner never once used the PTO but that's all I've ever had to do to it . I don't know what to say about the clutch replacement at 500 hours . All I can tell you is that I don't regret buying my tractor and if it's a good enough deal I would go for it.

Clutch life is probably 60-95% controlled by driver. I can give a good example-
I was in the ARMY in Germany in 1968. I was a Courier, they gave me a new 1968 Chevy 1/2 PU with 500 miles on it. I was the only driver, I kept the key in my pocket. I turned it in for a new 1969 PU. It had 35,000 miles on it and it would still squeal tires on a hard second gear shift.
Another driver for another Battalion got an identical truck. They put three clutches in his with similar mileage and time period.

Absolutely the driver is the key to the clutch life. Loader work is also harder on a clutch than normal starting and stopping. A good operator knows how to use the momentum of the machine to aid the starts and direction changes when using a loader that makes every thing much easier on the clutch. I have a 2004 Century 2535(400 hours) which is the same as a 3510 Branson. For a compact tractor it does an amazing amount work. w jones
