I've had one dealer say all Branson's have a Cummins diesel and another one say they aren't. First one said that's how Branson got into tractors. Cummins asked Kukje to make some engine blocks for them. Cummins then threw the diesel bits on. Kukje then got into tractors in part because they had access to the Cummins engines. Second one said they haven't used Cummins engines in "years".
Anybody know for sure?

Yes they are cummins type A series engines. This began back in 1996 whe the partnership started.

mine is a cummins made by kukje ,,I would stay away from the dealer who said they wasn't

They are indeed Cummins engines. Built by Kukje, to exact Cummins design spec. And I think (not positive) that Kukje has been in tractor manufacturing longer than they had the contract with Cummins. So, it was, tractor manufacturer started making engines for Cummins. Not, some outfit started making knock-off Cummins engines, and then decided to start tossing them into tractors.

Google Kukje, they make and have made a lot of farm and construction machinery for a long time. Some of it is pretty cool looking stuff, for other overseas markets. Some of their rice production machinery is just cool to look at.

Here's Cummin's 2002 announcement of a partnership with Kukje: Cummins.com > News Article
This 2012 Kukje press release has more info about them making Cummins A series engines: :: KUKJE MACHINERY ::

The A series was designed by Onan. Cummins got the rights when they bought Onan, made them for a while and then licensed them to Kukje to make them for Cummins and their own use.
I think Cummins-Onan uses them in some of their generators. This document mentions that and goes on to explain how Kukje changed the design from sleeves to bored in block (like Cummins B series), and changed heads to match: http://engineprofessional.com/TB/TB020118-2.pdf

Yup, Cummins in name only, but that doesn't mean they aren't a good diesel engine...

OP,

Normally the trolls don't wander this far down the forum pages, but occasionally, one gets bored enough and wanders in. They don't (normally) stay for long (although this one might stay a while, now that he's been fed).

Your absolutely correct.. But Cummins has proven itself. They ARE A WORLD CLASS LEADER in diesel engines. I've put 200,000 miles on my '03 Dodge RAM 2500 cummins turbo diesel in the past 10 years. I bought it to pull my tractor and trailer. It's NEVER broke down on me. So they ARE MORE THAN A NAME.. I guess you've never owned one.

Never owned what?? A Cummins?

I have a couple of them here right now, the REAL Cummins diesels are a HD long lasting diesel, never said they weren't...

Fake News. Disinformation. Competitor hype. Jealous mouthpieces. etc. etc. etc.

Cummins has built over 1 million engines world wide. I have used them for years. Cummins doesn't built all it's engines in the US. It has builders world wide. To be Cummins Licensed, you have to be inspected and provide the necessary support mechanisms to meed the Cummins standards.

My 6530c was built in Japan by Komatsu heavy equipment company.....the "other" heavy equipment you see at large construction sites besides Caterpillar. Branson number is B 3.3 NA.....www the number if confused about it being a Cummins licensed engine. My 2016 2400 was built by Kukje in S. Korea under the Cummins license...A 1100 N....look up the Cummins number if confused about it being a licensed engine. I think '07 and '16 are SORTA current engines.

Are you squaking that yarn again? Slanderous response. Being licensed isn't Cummins in name only. That implies a "shell" operation and being licensed to produce a companies products is not name only. Again, had you worked in industry you would know just what being licensed means!

As someone said above Cummins is world class company and a renowned diesel engine manufacturer. I don't know anything about the little engine being talked about in this thread but if Cummins put their name on it I would not hesitate to buy it no matter who initially designed it. It if weren't up to the task Cummins would not have kept it in their inventory. Just my opinion. My little Kubota has a Kubota engine but had it had the little Cummins I would have bought it anyway, mebby quicker.

How many "Cummins" diesels does brasnson make for over the road trucks? How many dozers get those diesels? How about FARM tractors?

They are a light duty diesel for light duty tractors that Cummins lets them use it's name. lol I mean, that's what it REALLY boils down to...

Like I said above, that doesn't mean they aren't a good small diesel for light duty use...

Do you feel that same way about the Onan engines of today???

When it comes to "longevity", they aren't even near the engine they USE to be!! And, guess what name is ALSO plastered on them??

Rob,

There's a difference. Now before you get all huffy again, stop, listen, and think about this. The "Cummins license" is to build the Cummins engine, to Cummins spec (with a couple of ENDORSED mods like solid cast block with no sleeves, etc). By being licensed by Cummins to build this product, they have to build it the way they agreed to to get the license. Most replacement parts can be had locally at a shop that sells/services Cummins products.

It does NOT mean they just get a box full of Cummins stickers, and get to slap them on the sides of any old chincy-cheap low grade engine that the sticker will fit on.

You are implying the latter. And I think you are doing so with deliberate intention.

I'm not implying anything... I stated it straight out...

I never said they were junk, but they sure aren't up to the legendary standard of the "B", like many Branson owners "imply"...

And why not? Have you ever seen a Branson tractor at least? What makes you think that they aren't up to the "B" engines?

Lots of Branson tractors here in Portugal with over 2500 hours of pure abuse in the land clearing work with big mowers that use chains instead of blades to eat everything you can run over it. They hit rocks, stumps and all kinds of crazy stuff where all the shock is transferred to the whole drive train and engine, some will run with clogged radiators till they can get home to clean it better, yet there is absolutely 0 complains of failed engines or tractors.

I have no doubts that these A series engines are up to the "B" engines... You get an old school engine without all the electronics to run it.

And let's face it, the only think that kill engines nowadays, it's all the emission crap and electronics they put on the engines, other than that, they'll run forever.

I don't see this thread of much value, mostly just :stirthepot:

Quite a few years ago, I was interested in Branson, so I found out my dealer that was hours away. A friend and me, drove to the dealer and it ended up being a car dealership.

We looked the tractors over and went inside, and in the "garage" part of the building there was two Branson's. Both of them had broken bell housings, essentially broke in half! Since then there's been two guys that have come in here, with broken bell housings, last one a year or so ago.

So, YES I have seen a Branson! And this isn't the first time I've mentioned all that, in here either...

As for the rest of your post, you are kidding right??

Keep in mind, I'll repeat it for all of you that don't read ALL of my post. I'm not saying they are a bad diesel...
