Break-In Oil ????????? Dealer???????

Take all my totals and divide by 3..look similar???? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know I compared the new Lexus SUV and the hybrid is about 12K more. You can keep it for that price.

I know the VW diesels have been getting lots of MPG since the 80's, but who wants a diesel? Who wants a 1980 car? Who wants a VW? Plus there is a size and weight delta here.

I don't think many buy hybrids just to "save" money, even factoring in the tax credits (though it might just compute, figured that way). My wife, an environmental educator, chose the hybrid largely for philosophical reasons, plus she likes efficient vehicles. Use less, etc. Interestingly enough, she had owned a diesel VW, and we had so much trouble with that car, top to bottom, that she won't buy another. FWIW, I drive a Passat, and that's been pretty unreliable, and costly, but it's a nice drive, otherwise. The gas she doesn't use winds up in my truck, so it's a wash.

I agree. I think the tax credit is a flat out joke since it is a one time deal. Personally I am not going to base a 30 to $40K purchase on a few thousand dollars.

Oh my god, you and I are saying the samething I have said about the VW diesel…Oh boy, we are knocking the Holy Grail on this forum… /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why do I get this weird feeling that this is in the wrong thread?

Wrong thread or not, I wish someone would give us a definitive answer about the so-called break-in oil: does it exist in the real world? I can't imagine why Honda would BS us about it?

as I stated before, "With all the talk of break in oil, lets see a dealer part number? Or a SAE or ASTM spec that it conforms too since dealer must conform to this? Not gonna find it since this oil does not exist. "

I'm just talkin out loud here...... I seem to remember 20+ years ago or so about actual break in oil. I wanna say it was just a non-detergent oil. Of course that was then, this is now and I don't even remember for sure. Back then I was killing off brain cells thinking I had more than enough. Wouldn't ya know it....the ONE brain cell I need......LOL!

Years ago, like 35+, I had a conversation with my Uncle about break in oil. At the time hew was a Texaco lube engineer and had a Michigan Oldsmobile plant as an account. He stated Texaco did supply a "breakin oil" to this plant (and probably the same for other GM plants). However the only difference between the so called break in oil and the owners manual recommended oil was the breakin oil was not "finished" to make it golden clear. This step was eliminated to lower the cost and it made no difference in the lube quality.

I agree, if Honda has a breakin oil, I'd like to see a spec or part number.

Perhaps Kubota does not, but some tractor manufacturers do have a specific break in oil. Deere, for example, does. -----> Click Here

Deere claims "High-quality premium engine oils should not be used as a break-in oil. The superior anti-wear characteristics of premium oils will inhibit the proper matching of components which could result in excessive oil consumption." They recommend it for new and newly rebuilt engines.

True? Who knows, I am sure everyone will have an opinion. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif However, some were asking for a specific part number for a break in oil. Deere has one.

Well so #1 you found a part number which is great. I do not know what they mean by “High-quality premium engine oils” nor what “excessive oil consumption” means. It is a Noack rating of 5% but now it 8 or 10???? Then again what does this oil conform to etc etc.

Also how does a Canadian website corallate to Deere assembly? Nor how does “frontier power integral to Deere design I have no idea.

But yup, you found a part number, which again is great. What it goes to is another question. So if I go to JD parts this part number will work????

I myself couldnt care less if I could buy it or not.. It was originally designed for your new engine from the factory, it's not needed anymore anyhow due to the MFG process and new oils. Follow the MFG recomendations for the oil change. Other than curiosity, I dont see the point..
