So, I went against the salesman who said a 600cc motor was plenty to plow with. Ended up with CF Moto Uforce 1000. There are 2 different schools of though on breaking in a motor. One, drive it like you stole it. I've seen the video and it makes sense. Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power
Other is, drive slow, less stress etc. Which is how I've always done it. Have I been doing it wrong all these years?

No wide open throttle for the first 50 miles or so, but yes you do need to run the RPMs up and down and vary the load to seat the rings good.

Lots of people say the only break in is when it get started off the assembly line and the methodology for 4 stroke (its different for 2 stoke) is run idle for a little while then slowly and steadily increase the throttle output, you repeat that 3 times and each time go higher in RPM until you reach full throttle, as soon as you do you let go and let it run back idle for a few minutes then shut it off and done (at least that's what I have been told) some people say if you baby your engine during the break in it stay lazy, their might be some truth to that as every engine seem to be a little different for some reason. Personally I drive it like I normally would, other then the fact that I won't hold it full throttle for too long (not as long as I usually would) and i don't hold the same RPM for too long either I try to use the whole RPM selection for the same amount of time (other then full rev obviously). Perhaps also give it a longer warm up as well.

Yeah, I've read about heat cycling etc. My boss, some 40 years ago at car dealership, would drive his brand new demo hard, very hard. there was always a relative willing to buy, and no engine trouble. I may be overthinking this, as I tend to do. Video shows loss of 2 - 10% power if seated the way the manufacturer states to do it. I don't want a loss of 10%, but would I really notice? Assuming it's true, and I lost the full 10%. This is a chore vehicle, not a mud buggy. If I went with the 600cc, it would be more of a concern.
I haven't taken delivery yet, maybe later this week, and it already has 7 miles on it from test drives in parking area. I have time, just reaching out for real evidence...

I do have a fact based mind, and know not everything on the internet is true.

If true you won't notice 10% until you try or race the exact same bike that was broke in differently.

This is a life long debate, I tend to be like you on the conservative camp but I also like giving her, drive fast and be first so I do a hybrid as I described above, I think its the best of both world... I think there's higher risk with the approach of drive it like you stole it and minimum risk (like lost power) on babying it but don't forget these are high performance engines and some could argue they are made for that. At the end of the day its yours so do what you think it's best and enjoy it.

Today engines and put on a rack and ran through there break-in period.
You mean run in as test run which is not a full break in, but some people (sound like you also) say this is all its required for break in.

is that your position ?

I think all the break in debate is just like all the debate of what brand of oil to use. It just doesn't make much difference at all, provided you aren't abusive. When was the last time an engine was damaged because someone used the wrong brand oil? I don't mean the wrong grade of oil, but the brand. Answer - Never. When was the last time someone's engine was damaged because they didn't break it in properly? In this case I exclude abuse, but rather just going out and using it as it's supposed to be used. Answer - Never.

So just go use it normally, or do whatever the manufacturer says so they can't try to blame any warranty issues on you.

The one exception I know of are constant load diesels like in generators and boats. In those cases the manufacturers sometimes call for 80%+ load for the first 50 or 100 hrs.

I seen a Yamaha break-in engine operations room photo/video years ago with all these new engines being broke in. Can't find it today.....

yes they all do but its more of a test run then a break in, they check for leaks, temp, oil pressure, sound and vibration more then a break in.
