Breaking Up Dog Hold

I broke up a couple of male dogs fighting with an electric cattle prod once....it worked since the electricity will travel through both dogs they both get it and not just one. The one I was layin into left without looking back:)

I have used e-collars for 17yrs for different bad habits and training... they work if used properly.

The also make training collars that spray citronella in the air right in front of the dog's nose - to them it's like getting a whiff of ammonia, they don't like it but it doesn't hurt them - it just makes them stop what ever behavior set off the collar. I agree tho, that this won't stop a dog that's already going at it...........that's why we have miniture poodles, very gentle natured, fun dogs.........that and that's the only kind of dog the wife wants, of course.............

a friend of mine runs a world famous dog company up in canada.
They specialize in attack on command, search and rescue, and do a ton of narcotics intervention. Here's his advice:

An E collar will do the trick. I'd recommend a Dogtra 1700NCP or if waterproof is not an issue a 1500 NCP. Electronics are great. But if the owner is set against E collar work then they have answered it in their previous response. .... remove air and the dog will let go! They did this by restricting the windpipe, a dangerous technique and it does not have the effect to "teach". It is better to use a well known uppercut with the foot on the dog's solarplex! Hard enough to stop the air as it it effective in humans! The done each time the aggression is shown, then aggressive behaviour will cease.

The action should be forceful enough to "drop" the dog and leave it gasping. Problem with this is the chance of trauma but it works. Using an E collar will not cause trauma but will do the trick. A dogtra collar has the potential to stop any action depending on the level... "Think Taser!"

Hope it helps,

anthony

Like any animal(including the human kind) Dogs are subject to the fight or flight reflex. If you put the dog in a position of having to think of it's own discomfort or survival(such as cutting off it's air supply), it quickly forgets about it's current grip on the other dog. The same way rubber bullets/sting balls, fire hoses and pepper spray/tear gas break up fights/riots. They force the creature under fire to think about themself. The problem is if you are not agressive enough or your application is not correct, you may only cause the redirecting of the agressive behavior onto yourself(dog lets go of other dogs ear and latches onto your hand).

Another thing that I learned and will now advocate to every dog owner that I know, is to be prepared and to expect some day your dog may be in this type of position or even causing it himself.

I was not at all prepared. So I did a very stupid thing of trying to pry my dog's jaws open with my own hand and fingers. BUT ... there was a bucket of water and a water hose within 15' feet of the incident.

So be aware and be prepared, which is good advice for many parts of life. In this case we have an oversight responsibility for the anaimal and need to take extra care for their and other's safety.

One of the more interesting stories I heard was from the owners of a kennel/dog training business.

Evidently, one day they had a new Rottweiler come in for boarding, and they like to allow the dogs to exercise together, so the "tested" the Rottie with one of their more passive dogs, before accepting it for boarding.

Well, the Rottie got the other dog in a head bite, and just wasn't going to let go. After a minute of thought, one of the owners grabbed the Rottie by the hind foot (no tail) and then pushed his finger completely into the dog's rectum.

This surprised him enough to make him let go of the bite.

The Rottie was not accepted for boarding.

Your mileage may vary with this technique, but it requires no external devices.
ROFL....I would say that was an external to internal device ;) ;) :)

I don't know about stopping a fight but when one is in heat it don't take much to get one started. If a dog doesn't fight or bite that's when he'll do it no matter what his history or training is.

Ever watch the dog whisper show? According to him you need to correct the behavior before it escalates to the point of a fight and show that dog your the "alpha" and not him.

Yes, we have all the shows and we met him a couple years ago with our Shepherd. He told us that the Shepherd was a great dog and we would have no trouble with him. Very true.

Wonder what he'd say about the shar-pei???

We're going to put some thought into our next steps.

Thanks
