Breathing dust while baling

I only bale into the wind :D:eek::confused3::shocked:

As I wear glasses finding a mask the works is rough. I mostly just tough it out - probably not the smartest thing. Somewhere I have a new mask the wife got me. Probably should find it and give it a try.

Yes, and when spreading cow manure on a windy day, remember to always drive into the wind. And if the spreader is not empty when reaching the end of the field, never, never make a "U" turn without first shutting down the PTO to the spreader.

How do I know? All I will say I was late for school that morning. I'll never forget it. :D

I didn't wear any protection as a kid baling or harvesting or any field work. A hat, yes, but still got sun burned.

I'M sure all that dust will kill me eventually. But I have not been in the field for 40 years, and I always "held my breath" when the wind blew wrong.

Gawd! I hope to live to do it again!

The wind here in the summer is always out of the southwest. We have 60 acres cross fenced into 12 acre sections. My dad has talked about tearing them all out and running them east to west just so the wind blows round bale chaff across the baler.

GOOD IDEA!

It's like siting a house to face the highway. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!!!!

For those of us without cab tractors while baling hay, do you wear any sort of dust filter over your nose? I generally have sinus issues anyway, but managed to make it through weekend baling without issues. I'd still like to find something to prevent breathing in so much dust.

Your local drug store or some (like mine) Home Depot carry professional or professional copies of medical masks that I use when desired. Much more effective and usable for me than the common round type.

Course when I have to breath in a little dust I think of how many 90 year old farmer's are still kicking that farmed the old fashioned way and survived.

Yes, and there a people who drank and smoked all their life and lived to be over 100 years old. So drinking and smoking isn't so bad as we are lead to believe?

I do like all of the oldtimers I've known before me. If a cloud of dust is too thick, I'll pull my shirt collar up around my mouth and nose for a moment while it clears. While mowing, I'll often cock my head back, cover a nostril, send the bad stuff flying, switch, and repeat. Any danglers get wiped away with a rag for such things. I'd use the rag for the whole process, but it would fill up pretty quick as I have pretty bad allergies and my nose will run as many GPMs as my tractor, so I do all I can to keep stuff blown out.

I'm with others that say a full time mask is too much hassle for a part time problem.

Vermont haying doesn't have dust anything like the west and southwest hay ops do...:)
