Br'er Bear came a calling

I'm afraid that my bears may not come as close as typical because last fall I cut down their favorite crab-apple tree out front, and I'm clearing some of the cherry plum brush that they like. And then, just this Feb, I cut down the tree that some have used to get onto our roof. They never bother us and provide a good show, sometimes every day for about a month. But, without those favorite fruits, they may stay further away.

Holy cr*p! Yeah I think you got a good idea going cutting down what they seem to like. I would be afraid of living there. Do you have children? If I lived in your area I would have to learn to shoot a gun.

Hey skidoo, you have better nerves than me!

We do have 4 dogs actually, I worry the dummies would try and attack the bear though and get hurt (2 are very big dogs and one is fast like a gazelle and stupid like a rock).

Interestingly, the day after I posted the pic I heard a single rifle shot from the direction of the forest where the bear hangs out. He has not been back since. Don't know if it is coincidence or if he got killed. It is illegal to shoot bears (hunt bears) at any time here where I live as I understand it. Nevertheless, farmers kill a lot of coyotes and bears. I kind of like seeing critters around as long as they don't become a nuisance.

The odd busted bird feeder really does not bother me, my worry is more that a hungry bear would try and bust into my sheds where the feed is, or the chicken coop or hurt my dogs. We have to share the outdoors with the animals when we move into their areas.

My kids grew up here and enjoyed the bears. No more little ones. I have no dogs. But, I do pack heat when I get up in the morning until I turn in at night. Frankly, I trust the bears more than the 2 legged ones. But, the heat it to verify that trust. We walk in the woods a lot. My wife carries pepper spray. I carry the heat. The pepper spray is to protect the bear. The heat is to protect us. In 18 years, we have yet had to actually spray a bear. Although one time, we were close and had it at the ready. Finally, the bear turned and went away. Well, a little nervous after coming into the house, I accidentally sprayed my computer monitor trying to put the safety cap back on...

Really, I think the key is to know your bears, respect them, and be prepared just in case.

The fact that you pepper sprayed your computer THEN decided you needed to take a picture of it and post it on the internet......:D

Most people would have just cleaned it up.....:p

I like the fact they aren't around here and we don't have to deal with them.

I guess I'll tell the funny part then. The spray went shhhhhhhhhhh, I immediately called out, "Oh S***!!!" and then held my breath. My wife and kid heard that and came running to the room, each took a deep breath to say What happened... Well, they immediately began coughing and hacking while I was just sitting there holding my breath. :)
