So, I'm looking for some objective input. I have an "opportunity" to buy a 2 year old Bri-Mar equipment trailer (16ft) that is supposed to be in excellent condition. I won't be able to see it before making the purchase. Would likely save 1/3 over cost of buying new. Here's my problem: Is 16 ft going to meet my needs for now and the foreseeable future or will I regret not moving up to 18ft by buying new. I plan to use this to haul a B2630/B3030 with loader. Rear attachments wouldn't be more that an RB or BB. Decking on the trailer may be oak rather than pressured treated since Bri-Mar went away from PT for a short time. Lights may not be LED at the time this trailer was built. Give me some things to think about guys. Have at it, and thanks!

Ditto....I always prefer new because it seems 99.9% of the used stuff I look at is in worse condition than advertised....I have tired of making trips way out in the boonies to look at something "like new" only to find it is total crap:mad: I don't understand what you mean QuartzCreek about not being able to see it first....you can walk away right if you don't like it...please tell us this isn't an ebay purchase:D

It was potentially an ebay purchase; however, it was not to be. I was outbid. Guess there's a reason for that?!? I had communicated with the seller and believe that it was in very good conditon. Seller was very close to me geographically, but was out of town and wouldn't return until bidding closed.

So, to hijack my own thread. What say you all about Bri-Mar vs. Pequea vs. H and H vs. Hudson?

Out of the four, the only one i'm not (personally) farmiliar with is the H & H . The other three are all good trailers(i own a Bri-Mar dump). Money not being an object, i'd probably prefer the Hudson.

Ductape- What do you like about the Hudson that leads you to prefer it?

Small contractors i've talked to love them. Just small things like compare the thickness of the fenders to another brand side by side. I have not owned a Hudson myself, but they are very popular in my area with contractors and landscapers. They also bring pretty strong money used.

I've got a 16 foot and wish I had 22, 16 is the minimum I'd consider.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I have been hunting for a trailer for about 4 months now, doing ebay searches, free classifieds, newspapers, other websites etc etc.

here are the conclusions that I have come to.

Length needed is equal to the length of the tractor/fel/attachment. In my case a 16 footer would fit snugly, but for 2 foot more of cost the increase is worth every penny. Additionally, it isn't just about how long the equipment is, it is about balancing the load so as not to put too much tongue weight on. and to be honest I don't want things hanging over the trailer, and I would like to have a little room for a box or two to store some stuff in.

Most manufactureres I have researched are building very similar trailers, and like kinds of trailers are all priced the same. The difference in pricing is pretty much about the c channel thickness, the deck, lighting, type of axles, tires etc. A same sized trailer that is selling for 800 less is selling for that much less for a reason. Not always, but most of the time it is an inferior product being used or the type of paint.

I have narrowed my search down between a bri mar and a moritz. Mainly because they seem to be closer to me, and time and distance is money. an 18 ft 10k trailer is running about 3800-3500 across most companies in PA. I can get it cheaper in other states, but then I have to pay their temp tag fees and haul it home. Gas isn't cheap and time is money. There are some that sell for about 2900, but the paint is junk, or the wires aren't sealed, or no stake pockets, or something that just doesn't quite add up. There is an old timer who welds up trailers for part of his living, and he makes a decent trailer, but he buys his parts where everyone else does, so the cost is about the same. I'd throw my business his way, but if he closes shop tomorrow i would be out of luck.

I too have chased too many used trailers through all the aforementioned areas, and every one needed decks replaced, new tires, or had bad wiring. Too many times the guys said "yeah, there are breaks on there, but I never hooked them up and didn't use them". I'm going new, and will likely have my new trailer in the next week. With my luck, there will be a pristine used trailer for sale 2 miles down the road for half the price, after I buy a new one.

Don't know if this has helped you or not, but I consider it trailer therapy after all the research I have been doing. it almost becomes mind numbing. One last tip, there is a guy on ebay who sells brand new bri mars from time to time with no reserve. But he hasn't had an equipment one in a long time. His 16 ft dual piston bri mar dumps were selling for about 3500-4800, and the 12 and 14' ones were selling pretty cheap. Cheapest guy on ebay that I have seen for a quality trailer near me. WV I think.

Personally, I would be very hesitant in purchasing a trailer from one of these "small" trailer manufacturers. You can't be sure if they have adequate knowledge and experience in structural engineering.

Sure anyone can build a trailer by wedling together steel, but is the structure designed optimally to provide a safe and adequate load, and exhibit good towing performance?

A couple of months ago I was looking for a used (10,000 lb) trailer to transport my Kubota L3103HST. I don't have the need to transport the tractor very often, so I couldn't justify spending $3,500 - $4,000 for a new "top brand" trailer (BriMar, Hudson, Pequea). I looked on e-bay, craig's list and elsewhere, but didn't find what I was looking for.

I found an ad, HERE on TBN, for a used Hudson 18' 10,000lb trailer, but unfortunately it was in North Carolina (I live in New Jersey). The trailer is about 5 years old and was garage-kept and in very good shape. It has the optional beaver tail, and also a custom-made locking tool box on the tongue. He was asking $2,400 for I but accepetd my offer of $2,200.

Luckilly, I had a need to travel on business to SW Virginia (Wintergreen Resort), and coordinated my business trip with the trip to pick up the trailer. The trailer was located near Winstin Salem, only about 150 miles south of my business meeting location in Virginia.

I'm happy with the Hudson trailer. Here is the spec sheet for it. Sorry I don't have any pics yet. I will be taking my tractor to my dealer in Connecticut in a couple of weeks to pick up my new Woods BH 90X. I'll take a couple of pictures of it then.

By the way, for you trailer experts -- I have a question about the "Donut-style" wheels on this trailer. Why do some manufacturers use these? Is is just a cost issue? One problem, for me, that this imposes is that the tires required are 14.5", Not really easy to find.

Good luck in your trailer-buying efforts.

2,200 aint a bad deal at all. I've heard of the hudson brands before, but noone near me seems to sell them. Nice that you made the trip and it was worth it, The farthest I have travelled is 75-80 miles one way just to see a piece of junk under a tarp.
