Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I honestly didn't check the timing gear closely, but the timing marks were correct when I reassembled it. A friend of mine with a bit more strength than I, was able to start it and it ran well, so with the exception of the high compression, the engine runs as it should. I'll check the gear if I open it again. Thanks!

If you remove the sump cover again also remove the spark plug and see how hard the engine turns by hand. Could be a binding issue due to not enough freeplay in the crankshaft or camshaft. Some of those engines used different thickness gaskets to set the freeplay, Most just use the .015 gasket and call it good.

Hi Randy,

Engine pulls easily without the plug. There is acceptable free play between the end of the crank and the sump. As soon as I get a minute, I'm going to check the valves again. Thanks!
