I cannot get the motor to start. I have 100 lbs of compression in both cylinders. The carb was rebuilt with the kit from briggs. The fuel pump is pumping gas. There is good spark. I can only get the motor to start by placing my palm over the top of the carb with choke applied and turning the key. It will then fire up and run fine. After shutting it down for 2-5 mins, it will start by using the choke. After about 5 mins I have to use my palm again and cover the top of the carb with the choke applied.

How is the throttle shaft? If there is play in the throttle shaft you will be sucking enough free air to "over-ride" the choke. When you choke it with the palm of your hand, you are completely bypassing the choke plate which is designed to draw a certain amount of air when it is in the choke position. Starting a warm engine does not require the fuel mixture to be as rich and it will start without the "palm choke" method. Check the throttle shaft and choke shaft for play. If either one has play, not only will the choke be ineffective, you will be sucking dirty air into the engine. At that point you would be better off with a new carb while your compression is still good. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm thinking maybe a bad gasket, which allows air to be sucked in. Also, even though you installed a carb. kit are you sure that the carburetor is clean. A blocked passage will not allow fuel to be sucked in when the choke is closed. Placing the hand over the intake will allow more (or enough) fuel to be drawn in to start the engine.

The throttle flap is NOT closing all the way when the motor is off. The spring back in the linkage around the governor is holding the throttle flap open a hair. What should I do?

The motor does start now. BUT, it sounds like it is running rough for a twin. I tried turning the screw in front of the carb a little lean or a little rich, lean helps BUT then the motor will not start at that setting.

Get it started and warmed up. then take a can of WD-40 and spray around each gasket on intake, if motor rev's up there's your problem.

Try this just to check something. With engine running remove one plug wire. If there is a change then put it back on & remove the other wire. If there is also a change then put it back on you, have eliminated ignition problems.
