My dog is trying to keep the yard clear of predators. In the day time I can see what she is barking at (see zoomed pic) but at night I need a bright spotlight that can reach about 600 yards. I'm looking for one under $200 and the smaller and longer lasting rechargeable battery the better. Do any of you have or know of an impressive spotlight. Thanks.

If you are into Dewalt's 18v cordless system, they have a xenon spotlight that is pretty impressive, probably about what you are looking for. I got it at HD, no batteries come with it,I think it was $50 or 60 bucks. I think some of the high end kits throw it in as a free bonus.

:D With my glasses, on a clear day, I can tell if the object is moving. OK, let's try 200 yards that would be to the cattle guard by the green in the pic below.

I don't have Dewalt.

Bought a Coleman LED spotlight last year....it will do 200 yds. but certainly not 600. Very bright, but best feature is nearly an hour run time on a charge, thanks to the LEDs. Paid around $55 on Amazon I think.

I just picked up a PolyStinger LED from Streamlight over the weekend. Not a spotlight by definition I guess, but you'd be amazed how bright a small light can be, and I do find this light impressive for it's size.

First Streamlight I've picked up, and I really like it compared to my older Surefires. I had it out last night, and I know 150 yards or so with the light wasn't a problem. Nice thing is with the three settings, you have 7 hours on the lower setting (80 yards with the lower setting wasn't a problem), 2 hours on the high setting. Fits in your back pocket (kind of like other things where if you don't have it on you, doesn't do you any good).

Stinger Series - PolyStinger LED | Streamlight

I really wish they would let you take a light home and test it. I don't know how they determine how bright a light is, but I've seen some lights seem brighter than others, even though they were supposedly "less bright" per the ratings from the manufacturer.

If you wanted to bite the bullet and go over budget, I'd seriously look at one of these

After a little looking around on the HID light, came across this

http://brightestflashlightintheworld.com/

After reading some of the comments, some people have picked these lights up (different manufacturers) for under $50

For what it's worth, I've gone through my share of spot lights around the house for back up (usually from a box store), and it does seem like you get what you pay for at times. I now hold on to my $30 receipts if the light comes with a "lifetime" guarantee.

The light I have with the longest reach is 1950s technology. It's one of the old hand lanterns with the 6 volt dry cell battery that forms the base for the lantern. It has a sealed beam bulb that throws a very narrow beam.

If you really want to light up the world at night, check marine supply. I have seen some spotlights on boats that would really reach out there.

Don, I've got one that I picked up at our local Atwood's store (think Tractor supply, Orchelins, etc.) and it'll do what you're wanting. I don't remember much about it except it's "1,000,000 candle power", rechargeable, has a pistol type grip with trigger and is camoflaged! (hope I don't lose it!):D Anyway, I can stand on my porch and light up the road sign that's about 400 yrds away. I'm not one to pay much more than $30-40 for something like that so I'm sure that's all that I paid. Of course, it's probably made somewhere "around the world". BTW, I like the dog-cat-bird pic and if you were a coyote hunter you had a pretty good shot on that old "dog".

I have a number of spotlights that will light up a critters eyes at quite a distance but the major problem is even though they are rechargeable they do not hold a charge long. The LED technology will use less of the battery and last a lot longer but the ones that are bright enough to see any distance are expensive. I have an old twelve volt one that plugs into a cigarette lighter (now called a 12 volt utility port:eek:) that will light up critters a long piece away but does not meet the criteria of small and transportable. I will follow this thread with interest cause I would love to find one that fits the criteria for less than $50.
By the way, at night you can see a critters eyes at 600 yards fairly easily -- just don't expect to be able to make out exactly what it is:thumbsup:
