I recently picked up a 14 ft Brillion pulverizer for next to nothing. The problem is it needs new axle bearings and nobody around here can or will help me find them. I either get blank stares or "I don't think we can get them anymore" and a promise to check into it and call me back, which never happens. I'm not sure how old it is or what model number it is, but it has a 4 inch axle and uses large spherical bearings.

It seems like there are many of these out there. Do they really not make parts for them anymore?

Thanks in advance,

Jay

I don't know anything about that implement or its bearings, but do you have the old bearing or can you remove an old bearing intact? And then, do you have a Purvis Bearing store nearby? So far, they've always been able to match any bearing I've taken to them.

Some bearings have been discontinued by the manufacturers and when this happens, the bearing houses, just either sell down the old inventory or they discard it. This is a common problem with some of the older cars today. There are some companies that specialize in obsolete bearings, but be ready to pay through the nose to get one. An example, the rear axle bearing for my 1964 Corvair used to sell for $3.50 in 1964.... in 1974, they were about $10 - $12. then in 1984, they jumped to $20... in 1985, they were discontinued, and they jumped in price to $90 - $100. Today, you have to pay about $250 for one. It is a matter of supply and demand. The supply is limited and the demand is high because they wear out. You can't drive a car without a axle, so you either pay the price or you have a lawn ornament.

Like what was said. I take them to the auto parts, they will measure ID and OD if you have the race to. They can normally find one that works.

Sorry, guys. I should have been a little more specific. These are large, spherical bearings, like on the end of the lower links on a 3PH. They appear to be made out of bronze or sintered iron perhaps. The axle shaft rides on the inside of the bearing, greased of course.

I contacted Brillion, and they gave me a list of supposed dealers, most of whom when contacted said they don't even carry Brillion equipment anymore.

I was hoping maybe someone had already been through this and had the easy answer. I guess I'll just keep digging /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
