Brillion seeder - thoughts about 3pt vs tow versions of larger seeders

Dadnatron,
There is a seed company in Shelby County KY called Thompson and Nash, they are probably less than an hour a way and rent a drill seeder for pretty cheap. I buy most of my seed and fertilizer from them. Great people you might give them a call and inquire

I ended up going with a Land Pride NTS2511.

There really isn't much on the net about them. But there are several folks in my area who have them. I'm not sure why Land Pride or Great Plains doesn't put some information and a few videos out. I'm thinking about making a few videos just to get some information out there for other people to access. The reps don't seem to know much at all about them.

It is a 'version' which has the same basic principle of the Brillion with a roller up front, drop seeding, and roller behind to press the seed into the ground. The reason I went with it is its ability to 'pretill' ground with the spikes attached to the front roller.

I know.. I know... I have already tilled the ground and don't need to 'retill' it. The fact is, I think the Brillion would have done a 'better job' for the primary seeding. Or at least as good. However, I wouldn't be able to use a Brillion for any other reason.

I chose this seeder because many folks in my area have one and use it to refurbish pastures/bald areas, etc on a yearly basis. This is more palatable to me, than spending $12K on something I would only use one every few years.

So, I found a demo unit and, if the remnants of Harvey will allow, will be putting in my fields and pasture in the next couple weeks. I wish I could have gotten into the field last weekend, before the rain, but I didn't get the seeder until Monday.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, hoping the 2" spikes on the front rollers won't tear up the pretilled ground too much. I've heard they don't do much if left in the 'least aggressive' orientation. Which is what I am counting on.

I'll let you know how things turn out.

I will tell you what I can about landpride and great plains. I live in Kansas and both companies are in Kansas. Both seem to have a history of letting their name and product do the sell for them. Both histoptically have produced good equipment. As far as I know the have been independent of each other, but have had a great deal of partnerships between them over the years. About a year maybe a year and a half ago, my understanding is that Kubota either bought into or bought out great plains. If that is true, your brochures and videos are on the way (lol)

I use Brillion seeders a lot, mostly for grasses now but alfalfa in the past. I also use a cultimulcher. A pick up model is easier and faster to work with but the weight limits size to maybe 8'. The pull types work fine for ag use for alfalfa but you better have dry ground and no sharp turns because they can bind up in corners. 8' is max for me and 6' best.

Around here, most people use the 6' (SS6) seeder, even for larger fields like 100 or so acres. You can move right along and so what if it takes a little longer because you only use it very 7 or so years. The SS6 seeder is lighter and being narrower can fit irregular ground better. How many acres are you doing? With 6', a lot less money is tied up and you get better results, I feel.

Renting is a good option as well, even if you have to advertise to find one or even travel. They may not be where you live but there are tons of them for sale around here in Ohio. Brillion is the best alfalfa and grass seeder around and you'll likely save a lot of $$ is seed cost over other seeders and also get great results. Brillion is all that I use.
