Broadband in the Sticks... at last

Time for action. Used my little DitchWitch to trench as part of the larger irrigation project. Rented an UnderWunder to bore 23' under a very thick concrete driveway. Ran most of 300' gel-filled CAT5e in 3/4" conduit (adding junctions and pull rope for future), routed through outdoor roofed area, bored through wall, and down the attic. Chipped, bored, and shoveled a 40" hole wider at the bottom, installed 2" OD galvanized pole (not standard fence post), and filled with 'crete.

OMG you REALLY wanted Broadband! :thumbsup: Necessity is the mother of invention!

For people that are using cell towers I like to tell them about Millenicom but I only tell people not near my tower.

I have tried Virgin Mobile MIFI (for 2 months when it was 'unlimited' and then they decided meant 2gb cap), then Verizon MIFI for about 1.5 yrs - but we had to keep bumping up our data to at least 12 gb and as much as 16gb/mth.. Then we went with Millenicom, 20gb of Verizon data for $70/mth..

We have been very happy.. We are about at the 6mth of using it, so we have now recouped the cost of buying the $100 mifi, and the $100 early termination fee with Verizon.. From here on we will be saving money..

I've had them for about 8 months now and have never been throttled. The cell tower is real close, maybe a mile or so away so I always have a great signal.

I have verizon homefusion. It uses a 4g "cantenna" mounted to your house then an rg6 cable to a router that has ethernet and wifi. I just got it a couple months ago and it's been great... much faster than the 3g aircard I was using before. You can get a 10gb plan for $60/month, but I have it on a shared plan with 2 smart phones. My only complaint is the data cap, but the packages are a lot more reasonable than 3g was if you want more data.

Not to one up you. I live three miles outside a town of 4500 people. I have two Fiber to the home providers serving me. I had a drop buried from both 1100 foot drops. I have full one gig and it is fast. Latency is great. Netflix is less than three hops away. Most site to the Akamai cach are three hops. I placed several AP on the ranch and can actually stream netflix to my deer stand. The same company has as drop to a farm site that is over five mile song. Seems playing the grain market is nice with a low latency connection.

Well over a decade ago, a buddy of mine left Canada to work at a FibreTotheKerb startup in NorCal - the technology is pretty old, now.

The irony is that many of the latest/best communication technology deployments are more common in what used to be called the 3'rd/Developing World.

In Canada/USA, mostly the bean counters say no to the new/fast toys. I won't start in on Canadian cell phone service as 1) not relevant to the OP, 2) my actual comments on that topic are not suitable for a public forum.

Let's keep hoping that there will be more meaningful wireless options coming online, as they are a great solution for us folks that want to live rural.
