The 3/4 ton has almost and 18,000 lb towing capacity with a 6,000 lb front end. I still have the wife's 03 Z71 that has been a great truck when I can get it away from her.

Sure about that???? Depending on the gearing the towing capacity is somewhere in the 9,500# range with the 6.0L gas engine to 13,000# with the best case situation.

What gear do you have? Its either 3.73 or 4.10 and that along with the bed, cab, and 4x4 or not will set the variances.

I'll have to double check my numbers but the GVW IS 9500 lbs thats not the same as towing capacity that I believe is 17,800 lbs. the rear axle is 3.73

With the 6L and a 3.73 axle your tow rating is 9,500#. Your GVWR, is the max weight on the truck axles and will be listed on your door jamb sticker. You already said your front 6,000# front axle and your rear axle is ________? That does not always equal the sum of the GVWR, its just the axle ratings.

Listed in your manual you you will find the GCWR. This is the max weight of the truck and the trailer on the axles. Say its your 17,800# number you listed. Now you weigh your truck with you in it and regular stuff you carry and subtract that weight from your GCWR and you will get your actual tow rating.

Say its 6,500# for you truck and your GCWR is 17,800# this would leave you 11,300# for your tow rating.

Here is the spec sheet on your truck.

http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado-2500hd-pickup-truck/features-specs/?styleIds=331286^331287&tab=tabHighlights

Your front axle is 4,400#

Your rear axle is 6,200#

Your GVWR is 9,500#

Your GCWR is 16,000#

Your curb weight is 5920#

So if you subtract the 16,000#GCWR - the 5,920# empty weight = you get 10,080#. With fuel, driver, and average cargo your tow rating would be right at 9,500# as I listed.

I hope the sales man or woman did not feed you all this bad info. The numbers you are quoting are close to that for the best equipped GM trucks, 3500 dually with the diesel and 4.10 gears

Your GVWR is 9,500#

Your GCWR is 16,000#

Your curb weight is 5920# listed for a 2 wheel drive work truck. Yours is 4x4 and a higher trim line so its about 6,400#

So if you subtract the 16,000#GCWR - the 5,920# empty weight = you get 10,080#. With fuel, driver, and average cargo your tow rating would be right at 9,900# to 9,500# more than likely as I stated.

Here is the towing guide.

GM Commercial Truck Showroom on gm.ca

17,800 lbs for a GN
13,000 lbs for a BPull

You are right but not for his truck. He does not have the diesel, he has 3.73 gears and not the 4.10 gears, and he has the shortest wheel base of the 2500 series trucks.

These number you listed are for a truck with the best options for towing. (best case scenario)

Fair enough.

Its all right here. I did not pull the numbers out of the air, got them from GM's site.

On his particular truck the tow rating for both the rear hitch and GM/5th wheel is the same, 9,990#

I am not trying to be a smart arse or anything here, just trying to help him out with the right info. Dont want him to do anything dangerous. I just hope the dealer did not feed him all this wrong info. I see it all the time when I go truck shopping. I usually study up pretty good and know way more than the sales person when I step on the lot about the product they are trying to sell me.
