I noticed it was a Grade 8 bolt. Is that from the OEM? Often people (even designers) think that just because it's harder or stronger, it's better. But these very hard bolts are much more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking - and being that you are from the Pacific Northwest, and this was on a mower deck, it would seem there are plenty of contaminants and moisture about.

Unless it broke when you hit a big rock!

I've had easy outs work for me several times, but it almost always looks like they are on the verge of breaking off.

yep.. easy outs seldom 'are' :)

I've had em work, and not work.. both fluted square profile and spiral.

the more you can get the hole drilled the better..
