Broke the Easy-Out,,,,,,now what?

do invest in a set of lefty's though. I have a set and have gotten alot of use out of them. that and a good set of carbide drilles.. they work great on broke hard bolts.. much better than HSS, and are more durable than nitride coated. and cheaper than cobalt..

what I do, is in my tool box drawers, I have all drill bits in one section, and in the next section I have all my square and fluted extractors, etc, rounde dbolt removers, and the lefty's.. that way I keep em seperate.

The lock-tight has never needed to be heated up before but now it seems to be a good idea.

Not sure i would use an easy out again.

Thanks , we will hopefully be up and running again early in the morning.

Actually, red loctite has ALWAYS claimed that you need heat to break it.

If the welding doesnt work, I'd drill the tap out with a good carbide drill. Yes they are expensive, but it will work. And make sure you center punch it in the EXACT center. I hope you did this with the first time around also. Because as a last result, you may have to drill ALL of the bolt out using the size drill that you would dormally drill if you were tapping that sized hole. IF you are centered and IF you can drill straight, all that should be left are the threads, and they come out easy just by re-tapping.

PS, one more pointer, and I dont meant to sound like a smart @$$, but with welding the bolt/nut to the easy out, DONT still be trying to turn left to remove the bolt. At this point in the game, you should only be concerned with removing the busted easy-out.

And also, if it is a through hole, and you drilled ALL the way through before you broke the easy-out, using a flat punch and tapping in the point of the easy out, while trying to turn the nut at the same time, will help free the easy out.

first id try welding a washer then a nut.

if that failed, id go to a carbide bit and drill it out.

If THAT failed id look at one of those special tap extractor / stud extractor rods that protect the threads and build up weld so you can make a better weld to the nut. Several companies make these rods.

If ALL the above failed, your looking at a machine shop with a EDM or tap disintegrator.

one of our mistakes was not drilling far enough into the bolt to release some tension, we did use Red Lock-tight but that did not seem to be any problem.

We ended up putting a washer on top and a nut on top of that and filled in the nut, heated the roller shaft up till nice and red and it came right out!!

thanks for all the suggestions, we are back up and running!!!!

Heat in the right place can work miracles...

Glad you got it worked out!

Where are you in the PNW?

For a 9/16 bolt, could have burned it out with the cutting torch, especially easy once you got a hole drilled in it... Easy to do without damaging the threads at all, a little harder in a blind hole, but still doable.

EZ outs are the devil.
