Broken Bolt

Recently got a late 80's Ford 1720
Where the foot board on the left side of the tractor attaches to the tractor the bolt is broken inside the housing (pics attached). Anyone have any good ideas of how to take it out? So that i can replace it with a new bolt. The foot panel is now rubbing on the clutch.

A left handed drill bit is sometimes enough to remove a broken bolt, other times you'll need a easy out.

I'd start soaking the bolt with your favorite penetrant (PB Blaster, WD-40, etc...) while you procure the necessary tools.

Whatever you do don't break the easy-out when trying to get the bolt out. They are a real pain to remove.

Drill it so that it's hollow. Heat it till it's red and then hit it with a easy out.

Hi Overflow,
Bummer! I'd put some kroil on the stud and let it sit for hour or so and do it again. Tap the center of the stud to shake it up a bit. Sometimes a small chisel into the stud at the edge is enough to get it moving. I would try using a small " wizer wheel" and put a slot across the center. The slot will be at least 1/16" so you would need a good size screw driver. Preferably a screw driver with a square shaft so you can put a cresent wrench on it to help turning screwdriver. If that did not work I'd drill a small pilot hole through the center of slot and start increasing size of hole with drills until a larger easy out would fit, probably one at about 3/8". You will get it out eventually! Torch Heat is a good thing when all else fails. Good luck!

I'll second what moship says. oil it early and often and be patient. I'm talking days not minutes.

Main thing is to drill in exact center, and bore straight in. That way worst case you can drill the old bolt right out, clean up threads, and replace. Take care not to drill too deep.

Update: does anyone know if this is indeed a bolt that goes into the housing? i took what i though was a bolt or a stud off the foot rest thing and the pics are attached but now i am not sure if this piece screwed in or just slid in? thanks

Hi Overflow,
There are websites, one being Messicks that list the parts for your tractor, From the diagrams it looks like you need part # SBA355500560 $17.20. It looks like the end into tranny is threaded. I doubt they would just put a pin into a hole. Now that it is thawing out in Ohio get that broken piece out.
