Broken bush hog blade

Really, that blade would spin around on the pin, start and stop, hit tough grass or rocks and sticks, and never touch the pin to the outer half of the hole? I get that it's unloaded, but there's a lot of action on a BH blade besides centrifugal force. Anyone else seen this? Curious...

99.99999% of the wear is on the loaded side. Theres nothing encountered in use that directly counteracts the centrifugal force. All reactions are at an angle to it leaving the opposite side of the hole largely untouched. None of my old blades are worn and polished there. I think debris actually collects in the clearance there -- frequently jarred out of course.

OK, I learned something. I've never had my BH blades off to see this condition, it just didn't make sense. Thanks.

I'm not sure why the hole isn't shiny, but both blades spun freely. I found that out when I wrapped some wire around it a few weeks ago. Didn't notice the crack though.

I suppose I should count myself lucky that the blade didn't shoot out into the tire.
You are right there. My LS dealer told me about his experience with a broken blade that went thru both sides of his tractor tire and then over 100 feet across his pasture before stopping. That could have seriously injured a bystander.

For that hole in the deck, just hammer it closed. If you have a torch you can weld it back together with coat hangers. Just get it red hot and melt the coat hanger into the crack. Just like brazing but with hangers.

Unfortunately I don't have any blue wrench either. Neighbor is an awesome welder and is very reasonable on his prices. If he ever retires I'll probably invest in a welder and torch and learn.

Another reason why I'm so paranoid about keeping everyone away when using the thing. Seeing the result of this, justifies my position and Dad's for teaching it to me.
