Broken cylinder fitting

4 years ago, on the first hour of using my new ck30, I raised the bh legs and they slammed up really fast and hit the fitting on the cylinder against the bh frame. (Bad design). I tightened the fitting "getting hydraulic shot in my eyes" . (I know better nowadays).
Anyway, all has been good. However, the chickens have come to roost.

It seems the threads were broken off on day one when the silly thing slammed up..
So, the fitting is welded to the cylinder and has bad threads. It appears to be a steel fitting though I meant to check with a magnet this morning and forgot.
Do you think finding a black steel coupling and welding it onto the existing fitting is a good plan?
I hesitate to take the cylinder apart and grind the old fitting off and try to reweld another on...

You will not find a black pipe fitting for it.
Also to point out you should never use black pipe for hydraulics.
Any how getting back to the fitting...You will need a JIC end on it.
One other thing you may want to find someone that knows how to tig weld and have it done that way.

Wallace is spot on...welding black pipe and 3000 PSI pressure is a recipe for disaster! This proper way to address this is to disassemble the cylinder and weld a new bung on-preferable with TIG like Wallace also mentioned.

Or, you can take it to a local hydraulic shop...

I'm frugal I would clean threads out put another of the a new fitting in same as the old one threads dry and braze it in place.

Disassemble if it need be or pull rod out if it's in the rear.

Ok, I saw cylinders at atwoods for about 100.00. Would it be feasible to buy one? Sorry, but I know nothing about hydraulics.

And where would I find jic fittings? The cylinders at atwoods seem to all have a 1/2" pipe thread on them.

The fitting is an elbow welded to the cylinder. The end that's bad is the jic end where the hose connects. I got a new end put on the hose at the automotive store. Soooo, the fitting has to hold a thread so the flare fitting will compress.

I have a jic fitting with a male end on the other end. Soo, my original thinking was to screw that fitting into a coupling, then kinda screw on the bad fitting and mig weld it. But, better minds than me have suggested tig and of course not to use a black pipe fitting. ..

I guess I just need to calm down, come up with a plan.. The dam is not going to burst, but the more packed clay I lose, the worse off I am..

There is a guy on the site who is a hydraulics expert, I would box up and send to him, he'll fix and mail back, this way you know it is done correctly and done once.

I'm bringing my stabalizer cyl. with me to the cookout to get his repack service or at least advice.

Would rather it done right the first time.

First thing I would do is contact Andy (Wayne County Hose) too. He has dealt with about any problem you could imagine involving hydraulic cylinders. I don't know for sure that he does TIG welding but I'm sure he knows how to get it done. If it were me I'd package up the cylinder and send it his way (or to Rick although I don't recall seeing a TIG setup in Rick's shop).

Do you have a hydraulic shop in your area?? I would take the cylinder off and take it over to the hydraulic shop. They should be able to fix you up in a hurry. The shipping cost on a cylinder would not be cheap also the wait time would be longer than taking it to a local hydraulic shop.

The problem with mig welding it would be it won't be clean enough to get a good weld
Brazing will clean the oil out enough to get a good bead.

You could stick weld it too.

Take a picture and post it maybe we can photoshop the repair for you
