I have a "2000" 4200 4x4 with a 420 loader, the rock shaft broke off while using a woods 7500 backhole, in addition the lift cylider pistons snapped in half on the loader while in full up position has anyone had same problems, deere says this has never happened before I don't believe them, let me know.

I've done some pretty heavy lifting with my loader and have had no problems at all nor have I heard of that happening to anyone.

When you say "Deere says" do you mean the dealer?
I've seen quite a few rockshafts pulled out by backhoes on orange tractors that did't have a re-inforced top link bracket.
As well as a few without backhoes. Lift cylinders snapped in half on loader is very unusual. Have seen the piston nut ripped off the threads usually from hitting something while moving forward or back with loader bucket.

greg,
I broke the lift cylinder rod on my 420 FEL last summer while in the full up position. I took it to the dealer and they repaired it under the warranty.
They too, said it was something they had never seen.
But, it was not due to lifting something, but rather me running it into a tree, while I was breaking down some branches.

my 420 loader's lift cylider also broke pushing a 3" tree, thought it could at least handle that, apparently I was wrong. What's funny is that the replacement cylinder is the same size, but the piston is 50% larger in diamiter than original cylinder's,does this mean there was a problem they had to correct?
since I only broke one piston they only replaced one cylinder with the new style, is this difference going to create a problem with uneven lift? should they have replaced both cylinders?

Hey Greg,

I am not sure if it was a problem that they had to fix and that's why you got a bigger piston or not but I would think that it would make a difference is performance per cylinder but without knowing all the properties I would cut the other one and say that it broke too. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif just because they look different. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Seriously though I would contact maybe another dealer to ask him his or her input on your situation. Sorry I couldn't be of any significant help.

I AM GLAD TO SEE THE COMMENTS ABOUT BREAKING LOADERS KNOCKING DOWN TREES, I TOO DO THAT ONCE IN AWHILE, WORKS PRETTY GOOD BUT NOW I WILL BE MORE CAREFULL.

Well it's been two week without a tractor sent it in for slow & sloppy loader, they tell me they had to replace the "pump drive motor"? I have had this 4200 for 12 months and it's been out of service 7 weeks I'm glad my FORD truck's don't have a record like that, I would be out of business.
I used to have an 89 Ford 1715 never a problem, I was really tough with it, it was a great deal stronger then this Deere.

I have a 4300 with 430 loader and 48 backhoe. My dealer told me that it was a common occurrence that the bucket cylinder piston buckles and needs replacement. "After a few you will get a feel for the machine and you will get by this operator error" he said. Note that this happened when I had only 27 hours on it.

Just received the $270 invoice. Guess I am somewhat fuming....

ME thinks the dealer is full of beans. And I'm being polite. I have a 4700 and I have not broken my 48. I have pulled out at least 200 stumps, mainly little bitty things 3-12 inches but I have also taken out a few monster 36+ inch oak and pine stumps. I would have to guess that on the backhoe itself I have put in a good 100+ hours out of 215 or so. I don't see how a properly engineered and BUILT backhoe can break itself by using the controls.

The only thing I have broken on the 48 was the bolt that holds the pin which in turn mates the dipper and boom together. I broke the bolt by moving the boom back and forth trying to wiggle a stump from the ground. I thought the stump was ready to come out and was wrong. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

You might try to contact the JD area field representative and see what he says. I'm not sure that is his proper title.

Good Luck....
