Broken water pipe - Xmas morning surprise

/ Broken water pipe - Xmas morning surprise #11
Mark, I didn't see any weather that cold, but I was doing a gas leakage survey in Brunswick, OH, in the Fall of '93, and as a "seasonal worker" whom they kept trying to get to work year round, I had told my boss that I would be gone the end of October, so he sent someone to replace me. I finished on the last Friday of October and intended to head to the south end of West Virginia the next morning until I heard the weather forecast; snow for Friday night and Saturday! So we took off Friday evening just ahead of the snow; figured I'd rather drive that motorhome at night than drive in the snow the next day. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I knew there was something I liked about Texas. We had a cold spell for 3 days but it's back up to the 50's and 60's during the day and the low 40's at night. Long may it continue !!!!!! Weeds are even starting to grow.!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

DANG TEXAS GUYS ANYHOW! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was down there back in 86 and back in 87 both in winter while in the military. had a few nice ICE storms while I was there and at DYASS afb tx it was maybe 2" of snow they closed the base and declared it un-driveable as there aws a bit of ice mixed in too. needless to say I was cooped up in dorms and decieded to go see a movie. so drove down town and every thing was CLOSED!? I was wondering what the heck... so leaving town I got onto the interstate and here comes a good ole texas statie with ihs lights on I figure someone must have ditched their car (was like one every 300 feet in the ditch) so I pulled over to let him pass he was pulling ME over for driving in too poor of conditions. while setting wating for ihm to pass he comes flying up behind me, and would have rear ended me at about 15 mph except I gave it a bit of gas and moved ahead some to avoid getting HIT by the cop pulling me over! hahaha. this guy actually asked me if I was thinking of making a RUN for it as I was pulling away form him! hahaha /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I said NO I just didn't feel like getting hit in the rear end! his face got a bit red and he said something like are you getting smart with me BOYA? I said NO and asked why he was pulling me over he said look around you can't drive in this! I chuckled a bit and said look at my licence plate this is a warm spring drive to me! hahahah. he walked back and saw my ohio plate on my car and he came back tossed me my licence and said to get home and stay off the roads! hahaha I laughed my butt off all the way back to the barracks too! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I almost told him to get home as he was one having problems driving not me but I figured I was leaving with out a ticket or a bump on the head so I better hold my smart alick mouth a bit /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

anyhow today it is much better it is above freezing all day! by friday we expect some 50 degree temps... one thing about ohio if you don't like the weather, then wate a day or so it will change through the full spectrum by then so you are bound to enjoy something /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

oh BTW lots of nice deer have been taken, wish someone would get that dang big buck that keeps tearing up my trees soon! he must be a good 10 point this year. also lots of turkey came up by the barn in the snow too... looking for the garden to eat the beans & peas still I guess! hahaha.

Mark, it is all relative. We just had this 20 inch snow here, and they were interviewing people on TV about it...and of course they talk to some guy from Michigan who was just traveling thru Indiana...and he says, 'Geez I'm from Michigan...up there this would just be called a flurry" .

When my Bro-in-law moved from Indiana to Portland OR, he worked for a VA hospital there. They had a little flurry there one time, and no one could drive. He ended up going around and picking up folks to take them to work at the hospital.

We used to have Texan migrant workers who came here to work in the summer and then headed back to Texas after the xmas tree season was over. It was a real hoot to watch those guys try driving in snow. I tried to help one guy that was stuck on a small incline. Everytime I got him back on the road he would "floor" the gas pedal and be right back off the road again. You'd get behind them at the start of a slope. Instead of keeping their speed (momentum) up...they would slow down.

I went deerless this fall. One night coming home from work I counted 49 deer along about a mile stretch of road. But around my deerstand, they were simply ghosts....nothing to be found. Yesterday I watched deer in my yard. (gun season is over of course).

Yep, and even warmer now. Very pleasant day on the golf course yesterday if it weren't for my lousy golfing ability and score. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

( You guys in Ohio have had your hands full. I feel fortunate to not have gotten the ice. I'll take the snow any day over the ice. It's true that these things always pick the darndest times to happen. It's hard to chisel those implements out of the ice if they have been sitting outside. We had a very dry , fluffy snow here where we live, which was a blessing since it is easier to deal with . I will admit to using my gasoline powered leaf blower to blow snow off of my van! I guess the man upstairs is just testing us all. )

We didn't get any snow or freezing cold here at my spot in Ohio.
The bad stuff was northwest and south west of where i live.
We diden't even get any of your dry , fluffy snow .lol

( Sassafras, Seems that bad things pick the worst time. The morning before Christmas Eve I was on TBN reading the latest posts and from the kitchen Mrs. TK says, THERE'S NO HOT WATER!!. You guessed it. Companies coming tomorrow and the water heater has failed, roads are covered with new ice, and my two prospective repair men are unavailable. I replaced the heater, company came, Christmas came and went and we had a wonderful Christmas. Look at my by-line that follows my post. For a short time that morning I must confess, that didn't seem like small stuff.

My water tank went bad {rusted through & sprung a leak } back in Sept. right after I got my Tractor.
Had to put in a new one. Thing that bummed me out about that I lost a lot of seat time while foolin around with the water tank.

I had a shut off valve on the main water line where it comes into the house.
When I installed the water heater I installed 2 more shut off valves just after the main one coming into the house. One shuts off the hot water lines the other shuts off the cold water lines.
This way if I have to make repairs on one system I can do so and still have running water in the other system.

Good idea, LBrown. I should have done the same. I was super cautious about letting the system fill up correctly after the repair. Didn't want to burn-out one of the new electric heating elements. I opened all the faucets, air and water spat and sputtered for a long time. Not a good day but we got thru it and had a nice Christmas.

You could install the 2 valves.
It's not to late.
