Thanks for the input folks. I was hoping to find a faulty connection but instead, I found an incorrect connection. Somewhere, sometime whoever had the connections off of the regulator put the 12 volt wire to the RH ac connection. Looks like the reg/rect is fried. Rick at gravelyshop.com is sending me a replacement out tomorrow and we'll see what we'll see. i think it'll fix it up.

Disconnect the wires from the regulator. Put your voltmeter on AC volts and measure the voltage coming from the stator. If you measure 20 volts of more then the regulator is likely all you need. If you measure 0 or very low volts at 3000 RPM then you likely need a stator too.

Hey Richard. I checked AC volts across the 2 blue (or green) wires and checked out at 23 to 24 volts. Plugged them back to the reg. and checked for output at middle terminal of the reg. and showed nothing. I received a used reg from Rick at gravelyshop.com today and put it on and still show battery voltage at the battery but show a little more than 3 volts at the middle terminal on the reg. I'd say a new part is the only way I'll get er charging. Rick sent this one to me and told me if it fixed it then I'd pay him but if it didn't, trash it and he'd get a new one to me. I was really hoping it would fix it because having to buy a new one eats into my attachment buying money LOL. But if it needs it, it needs it and thats all you can make of it. I did see a burnt place at one of the AC terminals on the original reg.

Thanks

Kelly

Been away a while. Great you got the tractor running and the plowing looks real nice.

I can remember as a kid fooling with the spark plug wire while dad's friend worked on the old Gravely, one from the 40' or early 50's. The plug wire was the type with a fork on the end of it. It would slip over the treads on top of the spark plug and then a small nut run down on it to hold it on the plug. I was just a small kid and it intrigued me. The guy reaches over and spins the fly wheel. Well dad and his friend had a good laugh at my letting go and jerking back. I did not see the humor at all.

You have brought the tractor a long way and it looks good.

That little guy sure is cute and looks like more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

If possible I sure would like to see a video of it working. Don't ever remember seeing a machine like that.

At least rectifiers are easier and cheaper to replace than the stator under the flywheel.

It's always something when you get an older used machine unless you get it from somebody who really knows what they are doing.

First off, Sam, I bet ya didn't do that again, did ya??? LOL. Ever hear the one about the kid who was told by his "friend" that if he was to pee on the spark plug it would kill the engine? And Crash, your right on. I really enjoy runnin' this thing. Really brawny, strong machine. And yep 2many, got a brand new reg coming from Richard's Lawn & Garden and ought to see it @ Wed.
Had a little bad luck while mowing today. I was around the garden road using the bush hog as a bush hog when I hit something HARD. It was a big piece of an I beam hiding in the weeds. From that point on I had a real bad vibration. I tried to continue but not for long. Just didn't make any sense to trash more than I had already. Raised up the deck so I could spin the blade by hand and watch it and sure enough, Bent rotor shaft. Richard's fetches something like $130.00 for this thing. So I'm gonna try to find a shop that can true the shaft and (or) try and true it my self. So if anybody out there has a 30" bush hog drive or parts they want to weed out of their collection, let me know.

PS There are videos on Youtube of folks running the rotory turning plow crash. I have a digital cam but have never tried to do video with it but who knows, I may fiqure it out and post one.

Ran the rotory turning plow through the whole garden plot today. Ready to plant. Man I really love that thing. And I found (as I suspected) that the old girls not charging. I checked with a DVM of questionable accuraccy and it read battery voltage but today I got the plow hung on a monster of a rock and it chugged the tractor down to a stop. Went to crank it back up and, not enough juice to turn the engine. I hooked up jumpers to my truck and let it charge for around 10 min. and finished my plowing. It runs a long time for something that isn't charging but I guess its time to drag my nose through the manuals and find the trouble tree for the charging system.

The rotary plow is a pretty amazing device. Pictures just can't do it justice. A person would have to use one to understand.

Update:

Got the new reg/rec. installed this evening and shes puttin' out @13.6 volts. Not the strongest but sure is better than it has ever done so far. Stator is most likely weak but hey, shes charging. Had the rotor shaft for my bush hog magnafluxed this morning and it passed the test. I got it straight before so as soo as I get the new upper and lower bearings (tomorrow) and the lower seal, I think I'll be back in the mowing biz. I bet I stay way away from that I beam. Don't need any more breakage.

Happy trails

Hello folks. Well, I got the bush hog back in business today and it seems to run nice and true. Put in new upper and lower bearings and races, lower seal and a speedi sleeve on the sealing surface of the shaft. Nice and dry under there now. Got the thing home today, put it on and cut the whole yard with it with no problems. I love it when a plan comes together.
