Re: BROWN 472 brush cutter max diameter brush mowing

.......here in our rough and rocky landscapes! With the hydraulic toplink, I致e found I can raise the rear end up pretty high on larger trees, back into them, then lower the mower down slowly and mulch up an occasional 7 pine.

I too do most of my cutting, at least the first pass, in reverse and didn't have the vertical lift I wanted with a new/used mower, even with the hyd top link. The lower lift arm pin position seemed to be about halfway through the travel of the lift arms at ground level. Came up with a simple fix I thought you might want to see as I think you & luke may be "mowing" like me. More clearing & exploring for rocks to hit than mowing.:D

Nice fix Rusty. I'll have to mentally file that one away. This Brown actually gives me more tail height than my old Woods (which was marginal).

You are right about "mowing" lol!

My tail wheel has held up well along with the rest of my 472. Brown makes a very durable cutter and very conservative in their rating.

I just purchased a Titan 10' cutter for my soon to be delivered New Holland t4.75. It is rated for 3" material and weighs 1500# compared to my Brown that specs out at close to 1100# at 6'. The Brown is rated for 2" material. Looking closer at the specs both units utilize 7 gauge metal on the top but the Brown has a 1/4" thick rear wall. Both have 120 HP gear boxes while the Titan utilizes 100 HP on the side boxes. I did find it interesting that the Titan uses a 5/8" thick stump jumper while the Brown uses only 7 gauge. I guess Titan makes the stump jumper heavier and thus the higher rating? Any cutter with 100 plus HP gearboxes and 7 gauge sheet metal is heavy duty enough for me.

I am very interested to hear how you like your Titan 10' cutter. I have been considering purchasing one of their 8' or 10' dual spindle cutters. I have not seen one in person, but there is a dealer a couple hours from me who advertises them on Craigs list. Looks like the 10' cutter is a little heavier duty than the 8' cutter.

I am also in the market for a medium to heavy duty 6-7' rotary cutter. The 1600 series Titan looks like a pretty nice cutter. Anyone have any experience with one of those?

Thanks,
Jeff

The 10 footer has performed great thus far. No issues to date. Tremendous value for the money. You can tell it is a well thought out cutter and built heavy in the right places. I don't foresee any areas that I can't currently use it on. I previously ran a 10 foot Howse that ran fine until I burned up the slip clutch. New slip clutch and PTO shaft, new blades, etc. Gave a lot of trouble after that until the seal on the right gearbox gave out. I didn't catch it fast enough like the slip clutch and shot the gearbox. What perturbed me the most on that cutter is they changed the output shaft so that I would have had to buy a new gearbox. That was all that was needed. Not worth repairing IMHO. The deck was rusted really bad. Actually tried getting the stump jumper off and just tired of the hassle. Used an acetylene torch but it was of no avail. Very happy with the Titan.
