Ideally, it is best to cut down the stumps before mowing, however in this case, I could not see where the stumps were until AFTER I mowed
That is the nice thing about a heavy duty rotary cutter, you can hit stumps, rocks, old rims etc, and not cause any damage. As mentioned, I hit a few stumps and have hit many large rocks in the past, never had any damage. The swinging blades of the rotary cutter will swing away, rather than break. Also, the slip clutch (provided it is properly set and tested often) will slip before any damage is done to the tractor. I can't damage the gearbox on this mower, I don't have nearly enough hp to do something like that. It's rated at 120hp and I only have 39PTO hp.
Most customers who break their mowers are either using light duty mowers and trying to mow beyond their limitations, or have failed to check the slip clutch, or run dry on gear oil.
There are very few things I could do to actually damage this cutter. The main worry I have when using it is backing into something rigid, and bending the back of the deck, which in that case I can just bend it back.
Another issue with going backwards is the possibility of bending the 3pt arms, you have to be really careful about that.
