Mowing Brush Hog check chains on slopes. C of G better/worse?

Uh, yeah. Don't see the need for this unless you're worried the 3pt can't or won't maintain a constant setting. Three-point lifts have been working pretty well for now near 70 years or so. If your 3pt isn't maintaining things, you need to address that...not get chains.

hey roy the chains he is talking about are needed by tractors that can not hold the lift arms steady, defiantly not needed on a case ih 585.but needed on others.

That's news to me...especially if that's the case with Case since I cannot recall anyone else posting about the use of check chains in any forum (except for the trailers forum).
However, not being a Case owner, I'm not particularly knowledgable of their products and only occasionally read the Case forums.

Attaching chains from the mower to some point on the tractor won't change the CG of anything. It only changes how it is supported. The mass of the mower in relation to to the tractor will remain the same.

Functioning position control vs not.

Yeah...I knew what Deere uses (for position control) but not what the Case uses (if anything). I'd like to see how eastexan responds...

There is nothing wrong with the hydraulics on my Case/IH. They are smooth and strong. It's the best tractor I've had thus far.
I have to mow several acres of very rough & hilly terrain, and it does a good job of it.

However, my Ford 3000 I had been using started developing hydraulic problems after mowing the same terrain over a few years time. And after reading many comments from users of the mower check chains on different forums, it appears that several also use them on their newer tractors to avoid wear.
They claim that by taking the weight off the hydraulics and putting it directly onto the tractor, there's less stress on the hydraulic system. Some even say there is better handling. This is probably true with older worn tractors.
But whether the check chains do all these things or not, what could it hurt?
I've wondered that if I had used them on my Ford, the hydraulic problems may not have occured so soon.

But, getting back to my original question was if anyone had thoughts on the CG on the tractor being changed by moving the weight of the mower forward from the lower link arms and up to the top link bracket.
By hanging the weight of the mower above the axle instead of below it, would that change the CG while mowing slopes?

Thanks for responding to my question, mjw.

No, as said in post 4 and onward. It will put more strain on the toplink tractor mount tho, as it will be doing a dual function - and depending on geometry of connection points could multiply forces.

i have mowed more filth then i care to admit where i live its steep and rough and slips , also very heavy and thick .average 2-4inch diameter with a woods brush bull 7ft heavy duty pulled by a john deere 5093 cab 4x4 with fel on and off. you will not need the chains if your tractor has good hydraulics and if you do you need to have the hydraulics worked on, most all tractors iv have operated and ive ran several brands have a adjustable stop to set the 3pth control to . the arms on your tractor wil stop at the point you have set everytime if the hydraulics are working correctly. the chains you are wanting to use are up to you they wont change a thing and wont do much if anything unless you have the 3pth set so they carry the load which in my opinnoin is useless. been there and mowed too much heavy steep ground where i live southwestern pa steep and rough.
