My mower shear pin is through the rear universal joint on the pto shaft. I致e replace a couple dozen over the years but this one left a small lip on the broken bolt that prevents the shaft from sliding forward so I can like up the pin and drive out the broken section.

I致e tried levering with a bar to no avail. My last guess is to block the mower and wrap chain around the universal To yank it with the tractor. I don稚 want to break stuff and that痴 what I might do with this approach

Any suggestions?

If you can see the pin, could you grind the small lip off with a die grinder or dremel?

Best of luck.

Maybe try heating up the Ujoint collar? Then pry.

A photo would help.

You know the yoke is retained on the shaft with a circlip? That shouldn't be a problem with your description but just in case you want to pull the yoke off the shaft.

Can you line the broken pin up with the hole in the yoke and use a punch to drive the pin out.

Getting all that lined up was the problem. However, liberal application of grease and a bigger pry bar finally worked. Broken bolt was driven out and replaced with a fresh one. And just to let you know, I headed into a rocky field that hadn稚 been mowed in more than 5 years and had to replace 4 broken shear bolts in an hour of mowing

Is this style of shear bolt PTO shaft is not used in the US or just less common? It's so easy to replace the broken bolt and also slightly cheaper since it uses smaller M8 (5/16") bolts.

ptsg, I have one like that, so "yes" they are in the US.

I've mainly seen that style on snow blowers. Probably because snow blowers are not designed and built in the US as much as other implements.

I could forsee that design breaking as soon as you engage the PTO on a brush mower. Mine stops and starts with quite a jolt.

Not a problem here and I have one on the brush mower and other on the tiller.
