I can't tell for sure from the picture, but I'm guessing I just have never seen one before.

...Is it like a brush cutter or more like a finish mower? What advantage does it have? How do the 2 types compare in price?...

I have very limited experience with flail mowers. They are between a finish mower and a rotary cutter. They leave a nicer finish cut than a rotary cutter, and cut much heftier stuff than a finish mower.

Flail mowers are safer compared to rotary cutters... most of the time the flail is facing down and debris is thrown downward, unlike the rotary cutter which projects it outward...

They are more forgiving when they hit the ground, still violent, but not like a rotary cutter.

Cost is 1 1/2 - 2 times higher than an equivalent rotary cutter.

Lastly, less PTO hp is needed to power a flail mower... you can cut good size stuff with a 30 PTO HP tractor with a flail mower...

Sounds to me like something I will look into when I get ready to buy. My "pasture" area is just tall grass with the occasional tough weed. If it does a good job as a finish mower, I could get 2 mowers in one, plus a nice heavy counterweight for the FEL /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Brown Tree Cutter at Empire Farm Days

This was hefty, but the fit and finish was very crude... right down to the welds...

An updated picture of Rhino's Lumberjack...
(correction- Blade holder alone weighs over 600lbs. (not 355))
(see attachment)

Notice the rear of this unit with spring loaded "arms"... you back up to a tree and it "chops" it down... the first picture has hydraulic doors that open up as you back up to the tree.

Re: Brush Hogs-Meanest & Nastiest

I looked this unit over at the Louisville Farm Show last feb.. The first thing i noticed was it didn't look like it would cut grass well. I need a cutter that will cut heavy grass too, as i don't want to have a cutter just for trees!! The person in their booth told me i was right, it didn't cut grass very cleanly, it was made for heavy brush, and trees.
I've taken out 4"+ trees with my Woods Cadet 72, and i'm now tradeing for the newly designed Woods Brush Bull!! It's the nicest designed cutter i've ever looked at! It's designed with a top that won't hold water or trash on it!! All so Woods easily has the best blade holders, that allow you to take the blades off with out haveing to buy a giant socket to get them off!! I've never had a problem getting the blades off my Woods cutters!
It comes in three HP size rateings, and several different widths. The HD verson has a 150 HP gear box, but i'm going to buy the med. duty cutter, with a 120 HP gear box rateing!

Re: Brush Hogs-Meanest & Nastiest

I saw one of these in action. Used mostly for ROW clearing. A real sturdy flail mower!
Will handle up to 10" trees. Ouch!
Keep Dreaming,

That is one big - bad boy, John.
