Just a bit of follow up on this....I have not had the chance to replace the fuel filter and the grass needed to be cut, so I wrapped the fuel line with aluminium foil and hoped for the best. It actually just about solved the problem! No hissing or tank expansion when I was done and peering into the tank I barely noticed a bubble or two coming up from the bottom of the tank. This was after 1hour and 45 munutes of running PTO and full engine throttle. Filter change and possible re-routing of the fuel line will be on my to do list this week though!

I don't know if you can still get it, but years ago I bought a roll of foil-covered foam insulation from JC Whitney that has an adhesive back on it. It's in a roll kinda like duct tape, has about 1/8" of foam insulation and a heavy, shiny foil -- much thicker foil than cooking foil. The foam backing has a sticky adhesive on it similar to tape that allows you to wrap things like fuel lines, etc, and it stays put. It also sticks to itself quite well.

I used it for years to help vaporlock problems on high-performance VWs that I owned/built, and continue to pull it out and use it occasionally today, even though it's about gone and the VWs are long gone...

I just checked their site, and couldn't find it -- only the tape without foam insulation. However, I did find something similar for household pipe insulation:
