Buck Glow plug indicator doesn't get red

When I turn the key to heat, and hold my hand over the indicator, I can feel it get warm. Haven't held it on heat more than about 30 seconds, and it starts fine. But I read in the repair manual it's supposed to glow red, and if not, one of the glow plugs has failed. I also see there's a proceedure to check the glow plugs, but I haven't done that yet. I'm thinking maybe the indicator won't glow due to old age, but maybe I should check the glow plugs? I'd like to have this thing ready for winter, so I want to make sure the glow plugs work well, get chains for my rear turf tread tires, maybe go to synthetic oil. Other ideas?

Mine doesn't glow bright red either, but starts as it should every time.

Mine gets cherry red after 30-60 seconds.

Fixed the glow plug indicator. I removed the dash and did a bunch of wiring tune-up, replacing the regulator w/a solid state one (which fixed my alt dash light staying on), 2 new 6-lug connectors, new fuse holder, a little new wire and a couple new terminals, plus some 0000 steel wool on the glow plug indicator and some corroded terminals. Painted the dash while I had it apart. Now the indicator glows bright red. Got a picture to post later. Now all the wiring is up under the dash, instead of hanging out. Didn't really have a big problem, other than the alt idiot light and the glow plug indicator not glowing, but while I'm enthused with a new tractor, it was a fun little project.
