The rounds may be cheaper but the fence is going to be there when you are not. So while you are sleeping your crop is always protected year after year. I have friends who have fenced in their cherry orchards to protect them. I also have a friend who lives right across from the other who claims the deer cause around $8k of damage to his strawberry fields every year and he does nothing but shoot all the deer he can. Each year he still has the problem. I have asked him if the deer are causing that much damage wouldn't it be cheaper to put up a fence but what do I know.

A friend of mine had trouble with deer eating thier shrubs and flowers- they leave a radio tuned to a talk station turned on outside their house- seems to work for them. Maybe thier deer prefer rock and roll.

As for the painting of trees- it is most likely whitewash- lime and water. The lime helps with insect damage and the white color prevents winter scald. In winter the dark bark of the tree absorbs heat, not good for the tree. The white wash reflects the heat.
